Risk Analysis and Optimisation of the Financial Structure of Parmalat S.p.A. through a Design Simulation Model
MSc Thesis (in Italian), University of Genoa, 2005
This study develops a design simulation model to determine the optimal financial structure (i.e., level and seniority of debt, and working capital facilities) that maximizes the value of a company, and it provides an estimate of default risk and credit rating. The model uses ordinary business plan information to estimate the assets' value using a simple Discounted Cash Flow approach. This differs from other standard methods based on option theory (e.g., Contingent Claim Approach) which are difficult to implement in cases where the liability side is not fixed, such as in private companies and in global refinancing events. Using a Monte Carlo simulation, the probability of default is obtained without the need of large amounts of historical data usually required to construct the entire distribution of defaults. The model is finally applied to obtain the optimal financial structure and credit profile of Parmalat S.p.A. at the end of its insolvency procedure.
