Graduate course at the French Geological Survey (BRGM) and ENAG (2017-2025)
This course, designed for students from diverse academic backgrounds, presents the state of the art of knowledge on the economic and social impacts of extractive activities, with a focus on both artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and large-scale industrial mining (LSM). It covers key concepts and mechanisms linking natural resources and development, including local livelihoods, inequality, conflict, and relations between mining actors and mining and non-mining communities. Drawing on recent empirical research and case studies, the course introduces students to how extractive activities shape development outcomes at both local and national levels.
Post-Graduate course for the EAERE winter school (2023)
This research-led course is divided into four main parts and guides PhD students from an introduction to the economics of conflict to current debates in the field related to natural resources. The first part introduces the role of resource-related economic shocks in shaping conflict. The second part examines how natural resources affect both the incentives for conflict and its opportunity cost. The third part analyzes how armed actors extract and tax resource rents. The final section explores the links between conflicts rooted in ethnic divisions and those driven by natural resources.
Post-Graduate course for the EAERE winter school (2023)
