Emma Crawford came to Manitou Springs Colorado to take advantage of the curative waters, hoping to relieve her symptoms of tuberculosis. Emma fell in love with an engineer, and they would often climb Red Mountain to discuss future plans. On one such excursion, Emma extracted a promise from her fiance that if she should succumb to her illness, he would make sure that she were buried on the mountain.
While he was away, Emma passed away. She was carried to Red Mountain and laid to rest. However, her rest was not eternal. A train track was built, which ended at her place of rest. When the project was abandoned, Emma's coffin slid down the mountain, and her bones were buried in the graveyard.
Since here reburial, Emma has been seen on her beloved mountain, easily identified by her red dress. Some people report feeling her spirit, or seeing her apparition as she restlessly wanders the mountain. Perhaps Emma is hoping that, once again, her wish will be granted, and her remains will be returned to the mountain.
