. . . "Three great fairs are held at Leipzig, at New-Years, Easter, and Michaelmas; when most of the business of the city is thus transacted. The fair at Easter is much the longest, and at that time merchants resort here from every part of Europe. . . Eighty thousand strangers have been registered at a single fair, but of these probably not more than 1,000 were book sellers. They come from every country in Europe, from Russian Asia, and even from Persia. At this fair you hear every language, and behold every variety of physiognomy and costume, from the sea of Aral to Philadelphia. . . Leipzig, 1826"
After reading this entry made by a traveler visiting Leipzig, Saxony in the early 19th century, I was determined to check the Police Melderegister of the city of Leipzig to see what type of genealogical information might be preserved in these records. I was not quite prepared for the sheer volume of records to be searched. Over 3,800 rolls of microfilm for Leipzig city are preserved. . . Many additional films are available for Leipzig suburbs. . . I was staggered at the information I received. . ."
