Most of the people in rural communities are unable to access medical care primarily because the hospitals are distant. It is rare for community members to have a means of traveling to the nearest health facility. Walking to the nearest health center would take a healthy person around 8 hours. The rural communities GEP operates in depend on agriculture for their livelihood. With limited land, the people are unable to grow enough food to meet their nutritional needs. Most of the rural people are unable to afford a basic decent well-being and the conditions of living are a threat to their health.
Most of the rural people cannot afford medical care; this has increased the mortality rate in these areas. Rural people do not have the opportunity to have thorough medical checkups for their illnesses, while most diseases require laboratory tests, people in rural communities still rely on herbs for medication. This situation has seen most people succumb to malaria, typhoid, and tuberculosis, brucellosis and basic infections not forgetting HIV aids. HIV aids is on an increase in the rural areas GEP operates because of the high rates of labor migration of the young energetic youth and men who go to towns and cities to look for employment.
With high rates of HIV in rural communities, GEP is currently working to ensure people are able to acquire testing and medication. GEP has facilitated over ten mobile health camps which are enabling people in hard to reach areas to have an opportunity to acquire medical care on a monthly basis. The numbers of patients are overwhelming the current capacity of the health camps and we believe with health volunteers from across the globe, we will be able to positively impact on the health of the people in rural areas.
