Suggested Geography Trips

If Trinidad, reopens, here are some suggested Geography trips that students can take with their parents.

SAFETY FIRST. Please ensure that you have the numbers for the police stations in various locations. Also check for the weather conditions.

1. Gran Couva: There is a huge river meander right inside the road near the Gran Couva Police Station. After you enter, the road, drive to a bridge. After the bridge is an open space with bamboo trees. Look for the meander, river cliffs and slip off slopes. Notice if there are pools and riffles. NB: Please BE CAREFUL. Do not go into the bushes etc.

2. Las Cuevas Bay: take note of the caves, blowhole, natural arch, stumps, bay, headlands, coastal terrace, cliffs, weathering processes such as biological weathering and oxidation. Notice the structure of the schist rock. Observe the motion of the waves. Throw a dried coconut into the water and observe longshore drift.

3. Columbus Bay, Cedros: there are groynes and stacks. Please take caution and do not go into the bushes. Observe the bay at high tide and low tide if possible.

4. If you have time, Icacos Point, Icacos has a great deal of coastal erosion. Check it out.

5. From West Mall, Westmoorings, see if you can find the terraces that are cut into the mountains. Those terraces are located along Lady Young Road, Morvant (Please do NOT go there unless your parents are passing there.)

6. Asa Wright Nature Centre: The tour guide will take you to the natural Rainforest area. Notice the layers of the forest - canopy, middle story, understory. Notice the natural flora and fauna. Observe the buttress roots, lianas/vines and the tree trunks.

7. At Brasso Venado, there is a large weather station. That area is Los Atajos but pronounced lasataw. It is a Dopplar Radar that collects data and relays to the Met Office in Piarco. It is located in the centre of Trinidad.

8. Piparo Mud Volcano: Please BE VERY CAREFUL. There are large cracks. If you should smell rotten egg (hydrogen sulphide gas) or hear a loud rumbling or feel strong vibrations under your feet, just RUN! If you get the opportunity to explore, observe the area covered with mud and how this area is hazardous to the people living there.

9. WhyFarm, Siparia: This youth started his own agribusiness, the contact number is 382-5780

10. Kalpoo's Bird Sanctuary Ibis Tours: learn all about why the mangrove is important to our environment and livelihood. I went on a tour some years ago and it was great. Contact number: 303-4287
