A Little Background On My Interest About The C&O Canal

My interest with the canal probably started when I was in the Boy Scouts, but later I learned that my Grandmother on my Father's side actually was the daughter of a Canal Boat Captain. She actually would walk with, and at times ride, the mules that pulled the canal boats along the canal. I only wish I had better sense when I was younger and would have paid more attention to the stories as they are mostly lost now that she is gone. I do have a cousin that lived with her for a while and can get some details from him, and they are so interesting.

Some people call it "middle age crisis", but I just call it not wanting to sit at home and watch the grass and weeds grow. I started riding my bike, which at the time was 20+ years old, and did sections of the canal towpath. Usually about 10 miles one way, then return. So it was a nice 20 mile bike ride. My 20+ year old Sears 10 speed decided it was time to be put to rest. I did fix it with some parts I found, but knew it was time to get a new bike. Bought a Giant Innova Hybrid. No, not electric and gas, but street or trail type. Worked out perfect for what I was going to do. I decided that I wanted to do the whole towpath from Georgetown to Cumberland and did it several ways. Had a blast both times.

Here are the details of my 1997 trip from Cumberland MD to Georgetown.

I also did what I call a "half trip" in 1995. I started out from my Parent's house in Fairplay MD and used the road to get to Williamsport MD and then jumped on the C&O Towpath there.

Are you planning a trip yourself? Here are a few of my tips that just might help a bit. You can search the internet and find other suggestions too.
