Fall 2014 EC423/523

best teacher in the business school, hands down

Fall 2013 EC423/523

Spring 2012 EC423/523

Spring 2010 EC 423/523 - 001

Great instructor, great guy. Barks loud, but he treats everyone right and does things the right way. The Econ Department needs more professors like him and Dr. Jindapon.

He should give most of the other econ professors lessons on how to be an effective teacher. He leads a classroom in a way few others do.

Very touch teacher. Expects a lot from his students, however, he does empower them with the tools necessary to succeed.

Awesome teacher... very funny.

Dr. Hoover sets extremely high expectations for his students and provides the guidance and support for students to meet these goals.

I thought he was jackass at first, but I understand now why he was hard on us and appreciate the fact that he expected a lot from us.

He was definitely intimidating at first, but I think he was just trying to scare off people that weren't willing to put in the time and effort to learn this subject. After those people were gone, he lightened up and made the class so much more fun. Great teacher and great to watch while he teaches.

Dr. Hoover is obviously very knowledgeable and passionate on this subject. He treats his students as adults and prepares them for the real world. He is tough, but he is always available for help. If students did poorly in this class, it was solely their fault. Dr. Hoover is an invaluable faculty member.

Dr. Hoover makes the course extremely interesting and presents material in a relevant way.

Fall 2008 EC 423 - 001

Dr. Hoover was somewhat intimidating so I think I would have been more prepared and ready to ask questions if he wasn't so intimidating. Other than that, I did learn some things but I wish I could have done better.

Great class! I have learned a lot. Definitely a useful and informative class.

I would have like to have seen more problems with actual numbers worked during class.

The course references micro very well. Good course to help students develop.

I liked the class but hated every one in here. These are a bunch of cry-babies. Would have been better if he would have told them to quit bitching so much.

The professor is disrespectful towards the class as a whole. He publically humilates students who ask questions. I have never felt this way about a professor before. I was very excited about public policy, but after a month of class with Dr. Hoover, I now dread attending. I will not take another class from him. I believe his need to make fun of his students seriously hampers the learning process.

This class has a very high academic standard but the material was very confusing the way it was presented. Teacher did a good job of making sure students were following along, but I found it very hard to ask for help and to repeat material. I think that if you have the right answer you should receive full credit, & not be penalized because it is not in fractions!!

Stop scary everyone. It makes it hard to learn. Great material. Dr. hoover was a good in class teacher but when it came to his office hours he was rude and hostile. He wouldn't see me until his clock hit 9:30 and made me knock. he then asked me why I had poor handwriting. On his homeworkds he would write that this is not college level work. He intimitated me but overall a good class. One of the hardest I've ever taken.

No students will see you in your office hours if you are rude to them in class or when they do actually come to your office hours. It's very clear that you want to demand respect, but they are better ways to do it - I'd respect you more if I felt you respected me at all. Course seemed to lack cohension; following an outline of sorts would help.

Give numerical examples; tough grading system because of so few assignments.

I think that he is a teacher who knows his material well, but he is like an excellent physician with no bedside manner. Sure he constantly recommends coming to his office, but when you get there he treats you like a child. Main point: If he were to grant students more respect, they would in turn learn more and respect him more as well.

The class is very challenging. However, it opens up new perspectives on government.

Although effective in conveying the material, Dr. Hoover was consistantly difficult to approach on matters pertaining to the course material. He may call it "tough love", but there would have to be some kind of recognition from him to call it that.

Fall 2007 EC 423/523 -001

Dr. Hoover is an excellent teacher. I honestly believe that I have learned more in this class than any other. Dr. Hoover is uncompromising in his standards for this course and his expectations for his students, but those who stay the course are better for it.

Dr. Hoover is an amazing teacher who truly know what he's talking about. He goes out of his way for his students by providing additional office hours as well as being there to help explain material. Anytime! I truly believe this is the best Economics class I've had during my four years & will truly use this information for years to come.

Good job Hoover.

Good class.

I actually learned something in this class. An engaging professor.

Fall 2005EC 423/523 -001

I think that Hoover does a fine job of relaying information to students; however, some of the pupil need him to slow down. I feel that he could go faster with the material. While being very clear about course objectives. He seems to intimidate and patronize students during class and especially during tests. The military background often helps and impedes at the different times in class.

Dr. Hoover uses his obvious expertise in the subject of public finance to introduce ideas that are not popularly discussed. His classes and lectures review controversial material while inviting students to share and discuss openly. This class taught me how to think critically about the political environment that engulfs me. An education worth more than memorizing books.

Mr. Hoover a well prepared instructor. He does not sway when it comes to properly preparing your work and yourself for class assignments. He forced all of use to strive for excellence in his class. I will leave this class with more understanding of the public finance system.

Demands great deal from students which will be beneficial in the long run to student's career.

Dr. Hoover is one of the few professors that I will remember. I'm not sure if Public Finance is all that interesting, but he definitely makes it engaging and enjoyable. I hope that I can have him as my instructor in the future.

Dr. Hoover is a good teacher.

This is one of the hardest classes I've ever had. The tests are very difficult & I wish he would not stand behind me while I'm trying to take the test.

Dr. Hoover is the best instructor I have had @ the university. He was always available and made me want to get better. I learned life lessons and appreciate him so much. I have learned, and wanted to learn, so much from him.

I was very intimidated early on in class, but as the semester wore on I got used to Dr. Hoover's stern teaching style.

Use more numbers when explaining new material so we can use them as references when completing the homework.

Great teacher made this a great class. This was an easy A that I managed to mess up.

One of the best classes I have taken. Dr. Hoover really challenged the class but I have learned more than I have in any other class.

Spring 2004EC 423/523 -001

Dr. Hoover is a great teacher, he has an awesome sense of humor and a good sense of style. Plus he knows his econ.

G HOOV is the Economics Pimp-Daddy! Ridin in his Escalade, pickin' up the Honeys. Gonna party in the ATL Hot Lanta!

The information Dr. Hoover teaches has an immediate return & he also has a pimp ride. Go GHOOV.

This is one of the best, most useful economics classes I have taken here, and Dr. Hoover is by far the best professor in the department. If anyone has inspired me to go to grad school, he has. I only wish I had taken every course he teaches.

Dr. Hoover is an excellent teacher. He teaches difficult material, while at the same time holding the attention of the students.

I liked that you kept the class challenging even though some students weren't performing as well. My only suggestion would be to lighten up a bit in office hours then more students would come see you.

Go to his office hours he's lonely.

Dr. Hoover is a great teacher and I've enjoyed his class. You have to have a good sense of humor to really get him, otherwise he might make you cry.

Dr. Hoover tries his hardest to scare people off at the beginning of the semester, but if you stay in the class he eventually settles down (or we get used to him) and you will learn a lot. He tells you exactly what will be on the tests so there's no excuse not to do well. He's actually fairly nice.

Dr. Hoover is one of the best college instructors I have ever had & this is my final semester. He has a most in-depth knowledge of the material, an intense energy & interest in the material, & most effective & thorough way of communicating the material to the class. He is a great professor & a great communicator.

I don't think I'll have trouble remembering anything I learned in this class. I only wish I had taken a class with Dr. Hoover sooner.

I think it would be beneficial to have more than 2 test, or maybe have the homework as quizzes that count as a higher % of your grade.

This is one of the toughest courses I've taken, but Dr. Hoover's excellent teaching, made the course fantastic. He is the best teacher in the Economics Department Bar-None.

The professor is very knowledgeable of material and is able to convey it clearly to us. Hoover's tough, but actually wants us to learn the material in order to get.

One of the most knowledgeable professors I have ever encountered.

Spring 2003 EC 423 001

Best economics teacher & class I've ever had.

Fun, interesting class. Enjoyed the real-world issues & policy issues.

Dr. Hoover is a clear and effective communicator who is dedicated and energetic. He makes every effort to make students understand the material. Also, his background, personality, and drive make a welcome contribution to the department.

Dr. Hoover is an excellent teacher. He's hard, but if you stick with him, you'll learn a lot.

The Hoov is a great teacher, but you have to bust your ass in this class.

Very good instructor, I recommend students to take him for an economics or finance course. Very helpful. Lots of interesting topics covered in class. Very clear and effective professor. More econ professors need to be like him.

Helpful class, but not very helpful or considerate teacher outside of class.

Be a little nicer in office hours.

Very good class!

Spring 2002 EC 423-001

Dr. Hoover has made a point of serving up high doses of Economic policy to his students. He bears down at the start and allows the student to evolve for the better. If it weren't for his Coke (classic) I doubt we would have made it though the whole semester. The information in the course is useful and helpful in the real business and political world just think. The Hoove will allow you to build on what you already know.

Dr. Hoover is highly entertaining and is very student oriented. As hard as he tries to intimidate students and make himself look like a lean, mean, teaching machine, he is really harmless. He is an excellent teacher.

Dr. Hoover is a very demanding professor with expectations nothing short of complete mastery of the material.

Dr. Hoover is easily one of my favorite professors at the University. The course can be tough at times, but Dr. Hoover's lectures are helpful. He makes class fun, but he keeps things under control.

The instructor is a smart-ass and this upsets some students, who are hypersensitive p***s. He draws all the requisite graphs and puts up with their bleary-eyed bulls**t. So: Bravo!!

Instructor does not fully prepare you for the homework assignments that he gives.

Dr. Hoover has been one of the best teachers I have ever had. Even though the subject matter was miserable, Dr. Hoover was able to make it somewhat interesting.

Dr. Hoover is one of the best teachers I have had at this University. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot.

Spring 2001, EC 423-001

Great teacher, tough class, strict grading.

Consider more weight on homework? I like the class.

Offer extra credit. Require more homework so first grade comes earlier in the semester. Excellent course, should be required for Accounting majors.

Dr. Hoover is an excellent instructor.

Dr. Hoover is a knowledgeable instructor but is too arrogant. When a student asks questions, instead of just helping, he wants to know why you don't already know the answer -- very frustrating to non-econ major students.

Test too long for time allotted.

Dr. Hoover's opening personality in class was very condescending, discouraging students from asking him questions or going by his office. Dr. Hoover seems to care about his students understanding his material, but his attitude in class leaves a lot to be desired.

Dr. Hoover exhibits all the qualities necessary to be a good professor: he's committed, patient, knowledgeable, and just edgy enough to keep people on their toes.

He's okay. The students in here just didn't try hard enough. Some were just dumb as sh*t.

There is an old saying, "You can put a dying horse in a bath of hot sulfur, but you can't make a blind, one eared, toothless, wife beating farmer eat a steak cooked in ground hog urine." Everyone needs to know that it is possible to juggle two chainsaws and a cocker spaniel while sippin' on some whisky singing Sweet Home Alabama. I've seen Dr. Hoover do it. He is a real entertaining fellow.

Dr. Hoover in an excellent teacher - One of my favorites in my four years here.

Great class! Best economics teacher that I had while at the university.

He's awesome.

Very enthusiastic about class. Very effective teacher.

Dr. Hoover needs to work on his attitude & playfulness. Many people are not to fond of it.

Hoover is a great instructor!

I enjoy visiting him in his office. He takes time to explain each aspect/detail of anything that I did not understand. He is a very great teacher. The University should hire more like him!!

Spring 1999, EC 423-001

Very helpful and seems to enjoy his work.

Dr. Hoover is an excellent teacher who cares. He makes sure everyone understands and is readily available to help if someone doesn't.

Good instructor, always willing to help even when it is outside office hours, fair in exam evaluations.

I have learned more from Dr. Hoover than any other teacher here at the university. I have taken two classes under him and both have been exceptional.

Dr. Hoover has always given 100% to all of his students throughout the year. He cares very deeply for his research and the material that he teaches. He will be an asset to the university.

He's the best teacher that I've had during my time at the university. I wish there were many more like him.

Spring 2000, EC 423-001

Dr. Hoover has been one of the best teachers I've had while I was here.

I've learned more in his class than in any other econ class.

Very informative class. Sometimes material is boring but Hoover makes it fun.

Once again, Dr. Hoover has proven to be an outstanding teacher who demands the most from students. A really great, fun, interesting class. Thanks.

Dr. Hoover is a great teacher. I have learned more from his class than any other.

Offer extra credit.

Dr. Hoover is a wonderful teacher, easy to talk to, and always available for help.

Excellent instructor; very accessible to students outside of class.

Dr. Hoover is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He brings energy and clarity to what can be different economic concepts.

Excellent teacher. I have learned more from this class than any other Econ class at UA.

This course was wonderful! It was everything I expected. Dr. Hoover is a great teacher, he makes class fun and very conductive to learning.

Don't treat students like they are in high school. Some people find walking around and checking calculator covers before a test very offensive.

Dr. Hoover is the most effective teacher I have ever had. I learned so much from him and wish that other teachers could explain as well as he does. He was always well prepared and available to help us.He was wonderful.

Dr. Hoover is a very effective instructor. However, he should be more favorable to rewarding students for not missing class and making an extra effort to attend class when others don't.

This is a great class that should really be required for all EC and FI majors. The public welfare part is especially good. Dr. Hoover is an effective and engaging professor; and is able to make the material interesting and accessible. He can also make it fun.
