There are two main areas with hotels and backpacker accommodation -- Newcastle East and Honeysuckle, both in walking distance to each other, and close to train stations. The conference venue is in Newcastle East for Monday-Thursday; Friday is at the University which is a train/bus ride from downtown. Honeysuckle is a popular area with lots of restaurants with great views across the harbour. See the map link.

YHA Newcastle Beach (backpackers, great location and nice place. discount for HI members)
Terraces for Tourists (good choice if coming with family etc)
Honeysuckle:
Chifley (two locations -- Honeysuckle and next to the Newcastle train station)
Ibis (on Hunter St, can walk or take a bus along Hunter St to the conference venue) (See below for details of special rates for this hotel)

Another backpacker option (with a pool) is Backpackers Newcastle on Dennison St (Hamilton)
