Sanding Issues
Sanding Issues
The are a number of strategies and techniques that are used in specialized areas of woodworking.
Sanding the Inside of a Turned Vessel
Do you need to sand the interiors of your hollow vessels, but don't want to risk your fingers doing the job? Here's a simple solution from master turner Ellis Hein. It's a small shop-built sander that chucks into your 1/2" variable speed drill.
This is a process for building a rotating bowl sanding tool that is used for sanding the interior and exterior curved surfaces of turned bowls and similar projects. It is used by simply holding the sanding disk against the surface to be sanded while the bowl is rotating in the lathe.
Surfaces which liquid sandpaper can be used.
Liquid sandpaper is suitable for using on panels, walls and kitchen cabinets. Since liquid sandpaper is a chemical solution and needs only application, it is convenient for preparing surfaces that have detailing or intricate designs or carving.
Sand-Through Finish Strategies
A client wants a finish for cabinetry which is mostly white or mostly black, dull to satin, with heavy distress marks and the appearance of sand-through which reveal layers of color beneath - specifically red and gold – basically, a beat up door with red and or gold showing through a white or black top coat.
Everything you need to know about Sanding
The mere mention of the word “sanding” makes most woodworkers cringe at one time or another, as they envision hours of intense labor, preparing their projects for the finish. But even though sanding may not be “a barrel-full of fun”, any woodworker who's been at it for long knows full well that a good job of sanding will make the difference between a professional-looking project and one that you'd rather hide in a dark corner where no one will see it.
