One of the first programs undertaken by Friends of Musoma was finding and matching sponsors to fund the education of students. Currently, we have 22 sponsors supporting the education of 12 children (7 secondary, 1 teacher's training, 1 vocational, and 3 university level). The majority of these students are overseen by the principal of Milenia Ya Tatu Primary School in Masonga, which is operated by sisters of the Order of the Incarnate Word. Milenia Ya Tatu school is about 80 miles from Musoma. The journey there by car takes about 2 hours because of the poor road conditions.
Students we sponsor come from very poor families; many are orphans due to AIDS. Sponsorship funds provide tuition, uniforms, books, supplies, food, and, more frequently of late, even boarding costs for students whose home situations are so desperate that they cannot succeed at school while remaining at home. Costs for the students can range anywhere from about $400-$1,900 per year depending on the students' grade (called "class" for primary school students and "form" for secondary school students) and whether or not the student is boarding. About 3/4 of our students have multiple sponsors to cover their sponsorship needs.
