The Frankfort City Commission designated two acres in Juniper Hill Park for the Frankfort Audubon Arboretum. The arboretum is near the paved walking trail and volleyball court. The first trees were planted by Audubon members and community leaders in 1981.
The Arboretum is dedicated to James Durell (1921-2011), a founding member and lifetime leader of the Frankfort Audubon Society. Durell was a forester, conservationist, civic activist, birder, and advocate for the reintroduction of the American chestnut.
The Frankfort Audubon Arboretum in partnership with Frankfort Parks, Recreation and Historic Properties continues to maintain and expand the number and variety of trees in the Arboretum. Several of the trees are labellled with tree tags.
We have the arboretum arranged into 5 planting beds, and we have additional information about the plants in each bed.
