Life is about more than just doing science.
I'm always up for a good meal and a good drink!
And when I'm not enjoying good company, I love diving into music, cinema, painting, and non-academic writing.
There are times in life when things strike deep, devastate, and unsettle us. While I wish that every human being could be spared as much as possible, I know that this is wishful thinking. I learned, somewhat late in life, that perhaps these tragedies can also serve as an opportunity to listen to ourselves, to identify what truly matters within us — what gives us our drive and purpose. From there, all we need to do is find the means to nurture it every day.
I'm attempting to do a bit of that here, by sharing a few thoughts that have had an impact on me, in the hope that they might resonate with others:
- A person saying their life has changed is a bigger effect size than any eta-squared value.
- From there, I want to know what my research is for, and the answer can't just be “to produce knowledge”.
- “You can only meddle with science when you yourself have lost the insolence of certainty! As far as psychotherapy is concerned, one can only treat another when one has lost the insolence of health!” - commonly attributed to De Ajuriaguerra (date unspecified)
- “Empathy asks me to put aside my need to contribute to the well-being of others, to really be available for the other.” - Keller (2017)
- Our needs don't take precedence over those of others. From then on, the aim cannot be to make others change or feel guilty, but to ask ourselves how we can be at the service of the relationship by being fully ourselves.
