There are two sets of rules that apply to Foster Community Garden.

For convenience, we have highlighted some of the most important rules here and have added a few specific to Foster Community Garden.
Community Garden Rule Highlights
- Only one plot per family or household.
- Each applicant must be 18 years or older.
- The plot must be worked by the person(s) or family whose name is on the application.
- Co-gardening with non-family members is possible; co-gardeners go through the regular procedure for plot application.
- Produce may not be sold or put to any commercial use.
- Garden members are responsible for keeping walkways, surrounding areas, and the garden plots clean and neat.
- Go organic: No herbicides. No pesticides which are poisonous to humans or are in poisonous concentrations, before or after application, shall be brought to or used in the garden area.
- No pets in the garden.
- Use water only for watering plants. Conserve.
- No taking plants or produce from somebody else's garden plot without permission. You can lose your plot.
- Food waste can attract rats. Be sure to bury any food waste you bring to your plot 12" deep.
- When you end your garden membership, return the plot to as good or better condition than when it was let out.
A Few Rules Specific to Foster Community Garden
- Gardening is allowed only when Foster Botanical Garden is open: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
- Gardeners must remove their trash and may not use trash cans at Foster Botanical Garden.
- Gardeners are allowed to place plant waste only in the slash pile managed by Foster Botanical Garden staff mauka of the plots.
- Gardeners may not take any material from the area mauka of the plots (bricks, soil, etc.). Exception: taking cut branches or poles from the slash pile to use for trellises and the like is acceptable.
