I am Professor of International Economics at the University of St.Gallen and Director of SIAW-HSG. Currently, I serve as Vice President for Institutes and Executive Education at the University. Previously, I have been Head of the Economics Department and Dean of the School of Economics & Political Science. Further, I am Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR, London). I earned my PhD in Economics at the University of Zurich and have held visiting appointments at various universities. From 2007–2011, I was Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Bern.
My research interests lie in macroeconomics, distribution, international trade and economic growth. I have published extensively on these subjects, including two books as well as several articles in leading journals.
In my latest book, Understanding International Trade, we present the main trade models—from Ricardo to Melitz—in an accessible yet rigorous way, helping readers grasp the economic intuition behind the equations. Written as a textbook for master’s students, the book shows how these frameworks can be used to understand trade patterns, welfare effects, and the distributional consequences of globalization. At the same time, it consistently links theory to real-world data and policy questions.
