After receiving a Doctorate in Economics from the University of Zurich in 2003, I was Lecturer at the University of Zurich and visiting scholar at the MIT. In 2007, I became an Associate Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Bern before joining the University of St.Gallen (HSG) as a Professor of International Economics in 2011. I am Director of the Swiss Institute of International Economics and Applied Economic Research (SIAW).
Since 2024, I have been serving as Vice President for Institutes and Executive Education at the University. From 2017 to 2023, I was Head of the Department of Economics and from 2019 to 2023 Dean of the School of Economics and Political Science. I am also a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London (CEPR) and member of the Board of selected economic institutions. Inter alia, I chair the Business and Statistics Committee of the Swiss Federal Statistical Office.
I have published numerous articles in the fields of macroeconomics, distribution, international trade and economic growth in leading scientific journals as well as several books, including one each at Oxford and Princeton University Press (see Research). I have also been involved in several research projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The most current project is “The DNA of Swiss Manufacturing: Sustaining Switzerland's Manufacturing Prowess”.
