Ulrich von Wilamowitz Mðllendorf, (1848-1931), German philologist, a leading interpreter of the ancient Greek civilization.
Whenever we speak of ancient Greece and the achievements of their civilization, we inevitably find ourselves asking the question “Why the Greeks?” What was it that led this numerically small people of the Mediterranean to emerge first from the Archaic stage, in which all other ancient peoples were at a standstill, and strive towards the accomplishments of the Classical period?
To explain the singularity of ancient Greek civilization, we identify something that no other people had at the time as the baseline value of the ancient Greeks: the capacity to question. That is to say, while the predominant values of other peoples could be summed up in the view that “we must hand down to our children the world we inherited from our forefathers,” the ancient Greeks were the first to challenge this perception, by submitting to judgment those ideologies and convictions that had been passed on to them. This is the common starting point for philosophy and democracy.
But such questioning at the time, unlike today, was far from the norm; it could not have appeared on its own, as it presupposes an inner tendency of people to wish to surpass certain limits. And this disposition for transcendence goes hand-in-hand with the element of competition: the desire to be tested, to confront, change, overturn and improve. In such a context, extrapolating our thoughts, one could say that a key concept for understanding and explaining ancient Greek civilization is the idea of agon (struggle, contest, competition).
Thus, questioning and agon were part of a single viewpoint, an overall life stance, which pervaded all manifestations of ancient Greek life, permeated all activities and was the driving force behind all expression of culture. In ancient Greek society, the concept of agon underlay the view that anything can be achieved as the result of effort, healthy rivalry and noble competition.
Often called the "birthplace of civilisation", Ancient Greece heralded numerous advances in philosophy, science, engineering and mathematics which have shaped our understanding of the modern world.
Western civilization has been influenced by many cultures, but his birth took place in ancient Greece. Apart from philosophers such as Aristotle and Socrates, Olympian gods, the beginnings of democracy and conquerors such as Alexander the Great, Greece brought as a contribution to mankind cool ideas that enriched the art of architecture and construction.

Ancient Greeks in Italy and Sicily. In the 8th and 7th centuries BC, for various reasons, including demographic crises, the search for new commercial outlets and ports, and expulsion from their homeland, Greeks began to settle in southern Italy. They included settlements in Sicily and the middle and southern (but also northern) part of the Italian Peninsula. Many of the new Greek cities became very rich and powerful, like Parthenope/Neapolis (Νεάπολις, Naples, "New City"), Syracuse (Συράκουσαι), Acragas (Ἀκράγας), Sybaris (Σύβαρις) and Paestum (Ποσειδωνία). Other cities in Magna Graecia included Tarentum (Τάρας/Taranto), Epizephyrian Locri (Λοκροί Ἐπιζεφύριοι), Rhegium (Ῥήγιον), Croton (Κρότων), Thurii (Θούριοι), Elea (Ἐλέα), Nola (Νῶλα), Ancona (Ἀγκών), Syessa (Σύεσσα), Bari (Βάριον) and others. The Romans called the area of Sicily and the foot of Italy Magna Graecia (Latin for “Great Greece”), since it was so densely inhabited by the Greeks. Following the Pyrrhic War in the 3rd century BC, Magna Graecia was absorbed into the Roman Republic.
With this colonization, Greek culture was exported to Italy, in its dialects of the Ancient Greek language, its religious rites and its traditions of the independent polis. An original Hellenic civilization soon developed, later interacting with the native Italic civilisations. The most important cultural transplant was the Chalcidean/Cumaean variety of the Greek alphabet, which was adopted by the Etruscans; the Old Italic alphabet subsequently evolved into the Latin alphabet, which became the most widely used alphabet in the world.
Today's Griko people (Greek: Γκρίκο, sometimes spelled Grico, Greco in Calabria, and also known as Grecanici) are an ethnic Greek community of Southern Italy. They are found principally in regions of Calabria (Province of Reggio Calabria) and Apulia (peninsula of Salento). The Griko are believed to be remnants of the once large Ancient and Medieval Greek communities of southern Italy (the old Magna Graecia region). Although most Greek inhabitants of Southern Italy have become entirely Italianized over the centuries, the Griko community has been able to preserve their original Greek identity, heritage, language and distinct culture (15% of the surnames in the province of Reggio di Calabria have a Greek origin), although exposure to mass media has progressively eroded their culture and language. The Griko people traditionally spoke the Griko language which is a form of the Greek language.
Modern DNA research confirms the genetic relation between Greeks and Southern Italians:

Greek presence in Italy begins with the migrations of the old Greek Diaspora in the 8th century BC, continuing down to the present time. There is a linguistic minority known as the Griko people, who live in the Southern Italian regions of Calabria (Province of Reggio Calabria) and Apulia, especially the peninsula of Salento, within the old Magna Graecia region, who speak a distinctive dialect of Greek called Griko. They are believed to be remnants of the ancient and medieval Greek communities, who have lived in the south of Italy for centuries. Alongside this group, a smaller number of more recent migrants from Greece lives in Italy, forming an expatriate community in the country. Today many Greeks in Southern Italy follow Italian customs and culture.
In the 8th and 7th centuries BC, for various reasons, including demographic crisis (famine, overcrowding, climate change, etc.), the search for new commercial outlets and ports, and expulsion from their homeland, Greeks began a large colonization drive, including southern Italy.
In this same time, Greek colonies were established in places as widely separated as the eastern coast of the Black Sea and Massalia (Marseille). They included settlements in Sicily and the southern part of the Italian peninsula. The Romans called the area of Sicily and the foot of the boot of Italy Magna Graecia (Latin, "Greater Greece"), since it was so densely inhabited by Greeks. The ancient geographers differed on whether the term included Sicily or merely Apulia and Calabria — Strabo being the most prominent advocate of the wider definitions.

Το Αλάτι της Γης μας προσκαλεί σ' ένα ταξίδι στα Ελληνόφωνα χωριά της Κάτω Ιταλίας.
Ο Λάμπρος Λιάβας (μαζί με τον Νίκο Διονυσόπουλο) ήταν από τους πρώτους που ασχολήθηκαν με τη μουσική παράδοση των Ελληνοφώνων, στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980, κάνοντας γνωστά στο πανελλήνιο τα τραγούδια και τους χορούς τους μέσα από την έκδοση του Πελοποννησιακού Λαογραφικού Ιδρύματος «Η Ελληνική Μουσική παράδοση στην Κάτω Ιταλία -- Ελληνόφωνοι, Αλβανόφωνοι».
Στα ίδια χώματα της «Μεγάλης Ελλάδας» (Magna Graecia) όπου άκμασαν οι αρχαίες ελληνικές αποικίες, η «Γκρεκάνικη» παράδοση επιβιώνει στις μέρες μας σε δυο ξεχωριστές περιοχές: στην Απουλία-Σαλέντο και στην Καλαβρία, με διαφορετικές διαλέκτους, τοπικές παραδόσεις, τραγούδια, μουσικές και χορούς.
Η εκπομπή υποδέχεται ένα από τα πιο παλιά και αντιπροσωπευτικά συγκροτήματα των Ελληνόφωνων του Σαλέντο, το «Arakne Mediterrannea» που διευθύνει η Ima Gianuzzi, εξαιρετική τραγουδίστρια, χορεύτρια και ερευνήτρια της μουσικοχορευτικής παράδοσης των Ελληνοφώνων. Στην παρέα προστίθενται και οι «Encardia», μια ομάδα από ταλαντούχους Έλληνες μουσικούς (Κώστας Κωσταντάτος, Βαγγέλης Παπαγεωργίου, Μιχάλης Κονταξάκης, Ναταλία Κωτσάνη και Αναστασία Δουλφή), που από το 2005 ασχολούνται αποκλειστικά με τη μουσική του ιταλικού Νότου και την προβάλουν μέσα από τη δισκογραφία και τις εμφανίσεις τους.
Παρουσιάζονται παλαιά τραγούδια στο «γκρίκο», την ελληνική διάλεκτο της Κάτω Ιταλίας, καθώς και νεότερες μπαλάντες που αναφέρονται στη σύγχρονη πραγματικότητα με κορυφαίο το πρόβλημα της μετανάστευσης. Ανάμεσά τους και τα τραγούδια του FrancoCorliano από το χωριό Calimera του Σαλέντο, με πιο χαρακτηριστικό το «Κλάμα της γυναίκας του εμιγκράντου», γνωστό στην Ελλάδα ως «Άντρα μου πάει».
Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δίνεται στον τελετουργικό χορό της «ταραντέλα-πίτσικα», που πήρε το όνομά της από την ελληνική αποικία του Τάραντα και συνδέεται με μιαν αρχαιότατη παράδοση, μορφή μουσικού εξορκισμού-χοροθεραπείας! Τα μέλη του συγκροτήματος «Arakne Mediterrannea» παρουσιάζουν διαφορετικές παραλλαγές του χορού, καρπό συστηματικής επιτόπιας έρευνας, ενώ συμμετέχει και μια ομάδα από χορευτές-μαθητές στα σεμινάρια της ταραντέλας που πραγματοποιούν οι «Encardia».
Παράλληλα, γίνεται αναφορά στην ιστορία, τη γλώσσα, τις επαφές με την Ελλάδα και τις προσπάθειες των Ελληνόφωνων να διατηρήσουν την ταυτότητα και τον πολιτισμό τους στην εποχή της παγκοσμιοποίησης.

ACCADEMIA DEL TEMPO LIBERO - 1 NOVEMBRE 2014 ESCURSIONE A GALLICIANO'

Nel primo giorno di novembre 2014 l' Accademia Del Tempo Libero ha progettato di fare un'escursione di un giorno a Gallicianò di Condofuri. Lo spostamento organizzato con pullman e navette ha portato 70 "accademici" in quei luoghi così detti, comunemente, grecanici, ma è più esatto dire dei greci di Calabria, come appuntato da Attilio Nucera organizzatore locale. Il posto ha regalato la sua magnificenza paesaggistica e l'accoglienza della gente d'Aspromonte che ha anche messo una scritta su di un sasso all'ingresso della bella frazione : GALLICIANO' KALOS IRTHETE = BENVENUTI A GALLICIANO'. E lo siamo veramente stati, accompagnati ovunque e con ampie spiegazioni sui luoghi tradizionali del piccolo paese che giornalmente raccoglie circa quaranta abitanti, ma che aumentano a fine settimana quando ritornano figli e parenti per trascorrervi il meritato riposo tra il silenzio di quelle montagne. Quel silenzio che, spesso, viene interrotto con suoni di tamburello e organetto mentre qualcuno improvvisa le tarantelle o i canti tradizionali in lingua grecofona o ellofona. Dopo le rituali visite all'anfiteatro, alla piccola chiesa ortodossa, alla fontana dell'amore, al museo dell'associazione CUM.EL.CA. e alla escursione sul monte, è stato organizzato un pranzo nel locale tradizionale a base di antipasti calabresi, maccheroni al sugo, arrosto di salsicce, capra lessata, arrosto di maiale e tanto buon vino rosso caratteristico di quelle contrade. Per i grecanici il vino è simbolo di ospitalità...ne descrive Omero ampiamente le offerte che i greci facevano mescendo il rosso liquido per gli ospiti o per i pellegrini di passaggio. Questo tipo di sacralità è ancora in uso tra la gente di Gallicianò che ci ha fatto trascorrere una meravigliosa giornata terminata a suon di chitarre, tamburelli, organetto e canti popolari, coinvolgendoci tutti ai balli tradizionali accompagnati da esperti locali. A sera il rientro, stanchi, ma consolati dal ricordo della bellissima giornata trascorsa con quel che sono state le nostre radici magnogreche.

Στην πρόσφατη περιπλάνησή μου στα ελληνόφωνα χωριά της Καλαβρίας είχα την ευκαιρία, μεταξύ των άλλων, να συζητήσω με τους ελληνόφωνες Mimmo Nucera καιRaffaele Roda στο εθνογραφικό μουσείο του χωριού Galliciano. Μου εκμυστηρεύτηκαν την αγωνία τους για την γλώσσα των Grico που χάνεται, για τα ελληνόφωνα χωριά που εγκαταλείπονται, για την έλλειψη δεσμών με την μητέρα Ελλάδα και για τις δικές του προσπάθειες να κρατήσουν ζωντανή τη γλώσσα και τις παραδόσεις τους. Το γλωσσικό ιδίωμα του "γκρίκο" είναι μια ελληνική διάλεκτος που μιλάν οι ελληνόφωνοι κάτοικοι της Κάτω Ιταλίας. Το οδοιπορικό του Αργύρη Ντινόπουλου στην Κάτω Ιταλία καταγράφει στοιχεία του ελληνισμού. Αυτά διασώζονται μέσα από την μακραίωνη Ιστορία και τον πολιτισμό της περιοχής. Υπάρχουν έντονα και στην σημερινή καθημερινότητα των ελληνόφωνων κατοίκων της Κάτω Ιταλίας.
Οι Ιταλοί της Απουλίας δίνουν αγώνα μέσα από τη μουσική και το τραγούδι να κρατήσουν ζωντανή τη γλώσσα.
Η διάλεκτος έχει τις ρίζες της στα αρχαία ελληνικά και συνεχίζει να επιβιώνει -ένα φαινόμενο εκπληκτικό- στα χωριά της Κάτω Ιταλίας.
Τα γκρίκο έχουν αναγνωριστεί επίσημα από το Ιταλικό Κράτος ως μειονοτική γλώσσα, παρόλα αυτά όμως διατρέχουν κίνδυνο εξαφάνισης.

Πώς είναι να ακούς ζωντανά την γλώσσα που μιλούσε ο Όμηρος; Πώς είναι να ακούς τον ελληνικό εθνικό ύμνο σε ένα απομακρυσμένο χωριό της Ιταλίας και να μιλάς με τους γκρεκάνους που αισθάνονται περισσότερο Έλληνες από τους Έλληνες; Αυτούς τους Έλληνες που θεωρούν την Ελλάδα μάνα, μία χώρα ιερή που «όποιος πατάει το πόδι του πρέπει πρώτα να βγάλει τα παπούτσια του ως ένδειξη σεβασμού», όπως λέει με συγκίνηση μπροστά στην κάμερα ο γκρεκάνος του Γκαλιτσιανό στην Καλαβρία.
Όταν τον 8 αιώνα π. Χ. Έλληνες άποικοι εγκαταστάθηκαν στα παράλια της Σικελίας και της Κάτω Ιταλίας, χαρίζοντας σε αυτή την περιοχή το όνομα Μεγάλη Ελλάδα, λίγοι θα μπορούσαν να φανταστούν ότι τα χωριά αυτά θα παρέμεναν ζωντανά και ελληνικά μέσα στους αιώνες μέχρι σήμερα. Αποτελούν, όπως λένε οι γκρεκάνοι κάτοικοι, ένα θαύμα της ιστορίας. Με αυτό το «θαύμα» αποφάσισε η εκπομπή «360°» να ξεκινήσει τη δεύτερη τηλεοπτική χρονιά της στον Alpha.
Η Σοφία Παπαϊωάννου και η ομάδα της παρουσιάζουν μία εκπομπή για τα ελληνόφωνα χωριά της Κάτω Ιταλίας, γεμάτη πολύ συναίσθημα και μία ανεξήγητη νοσταλγία για τους Έλληνες. Μία εκπομπή για την ιστορία μιας γλώσσας που χάνεται, για μία παράδοση που θα ήταν ίσως αμαρτία μετά από τόσους αιώνες να αφήσουμε να πεθάνει.
