Close Prompts
Close the cream colored system tray bubble prompting you to "Take a tour of Windows XP".
Close the similar antivirus warning bubble. It may re-appear. Continue to close or ignore it.
Adjust Date/Time
The clock will be incorrect. r-click, select "Adjust Date/Time" and select your correct time zone.
Display Properties
r-click an empty space on your desktop and select "Properties"
Desktop tab
Customize Desktop...
Check the following:
+ My Documents
+ My Computer
Uncheck:
- My Network Places
- Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard ...
Screen Saver tab
Set Screen saver to "(None)"
Power ...
Turn off monitor:
After 15 minutes
Appearance tab
Advanced
Item:
Icon Spacing (Horizontal) = 84
Icon Spacing (Vertical) = 52
Hint: may need to click "NumLock" on keyboard if editing numeric values with keypad
Settings tab
Screen resolution
Standard resolution desktop = 1280 x 1024
Laptop / wide screen monitor = depends
Hint: only accept settings if it looks OK, otherwise try another.
To finish, click OK. You must "Log Off" then log back on for all settings to take effect
Folder view
2-click on My Documents (Desktop)
Maximize window to full screen
On top (text) toolbar, click "View" and select "Status Bar"
r-click in empty space on icon toolbar
Customize...
Text options = Show text labels
Icon options = Large icons
Add buttons AND SEPARATORS from left-to-right and arrange in the following order:
Back
Forward
Up
Refresh
---------------- (Separator)
Folders
Views
----------------
Search
Stop
----------------
Properties
Delete
----------------
Folder Options
r-click in empty space in My Documents window
View = Details
r-click in empty space in My Documents window again
Arrange Icons By = Type
r-click in empty space in My Documents window one last time
Arrange Icons By = Show in Groups
To set view, click on the "Type" column head at top of window, then leave the My Documents window open
On top (text) toolbar, click "Tools > Folder Options..."
View tab (select the following)
+check first 6 boxes
+select "Show hidden files and folders"
-uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
+check "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"
-leave unchecked "Launch folder windows in a separate process"
Leave everything from this point to the bottom as is, whether checked or unchecked.
click "Apply to All Folders" at the top of window
click "OK" and proceed to the next step
