Filippo Santucci de Magistris

He graduated in Civil Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II in 1992 with a thesis of an automatic triaxial apparatus. After graduating, he spent a period of research at the City University of London under the guidance of Prof. John Atkinson and Prof. Mattew Coop. He returned to Italy where he gets a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Rome La Sapienza and the University of Naples Federico II under the guidance of Prof. Vinale, who was the first professor in Soil Dynamics in Italy. His thesis concerned the mechanical behavior of soils to be used for the construction of earth dams.

Upon completion of the Ph.D., he won a postgraduate scholarship at the University of Tokyo. In this extraordinary training and research center, under the guidance of Prof. Tatsuoka, he contributed to the development of sophisticated laboratory equipment and deepened the stress-strain-time behavior of soils.

When he returned to Italy, he became a researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Naples Federico II and started working more directly in the field of Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering.

In 2005 he moved to the University of Molise, a relatively small university located between Rome and Naples, continuing to deal mainly with Earthquake Engineering. He was the Head of the graduate school in Civil Engineering.

He was lucky enough to receive excellent teaching from many good Italian and international professors and to collaborate as a board member of Ph.D. in Seismic Risk and then in Biosciences and Territory, with so many well-doctoral students. At the moment, he is on the board of the Doctorate Programme in Biology and Applied Science. In this concern, he was developing various research activities ranging from the mechanical behavior of soils to the behavior of retaining walls in the seismic zone, to the verification of the stability of the slopes, to the geotechnical surveys, to the stability of the underground pipelines. These activities have produced several publications and in particular scientific articles on international journals. He is very fond of some of these works, although he believes that the most beautiful item is what you still have to write or try to publish.

Outside the working world, he is passionate about football and in particular his beloved Naples teams. And he loves traveling, arguing that knowing different places and people is surely a formidable tool to open up the mind.
