Knowledge

No writer, no matter how talented, can completely invent a world unrelated to this one. Even if it were possible such a world would be beyond description. The very use of words nails the writer down to the relations between things which can, at best, only be marginally altered. Knowledge of how the world works is essential to any act of imagination that would alter it. These references cannot ever be complete but they are prodigious in their scope.
