Garden Hints
January Start forcing branches for indoor blooms; water trees and shrubs during thaws. Prune trees.
February Plant lettuce and spinach. Erect new bluebird houses.
March Plant potatoes and cool weather crops. Prune back roses and crape myrtles. Cut back last year’s perennials.
April Put out hummingbird feeders. Prune early blooming shrubs as flowers fade. Pot up plants for Garden Club sale. Set out hardy annuals. Fertilize your garden. Pinch back mums and cut back asters.
May Set out tender annuals. Get weeds out when they are small, then mulch. Fertilize roses, pinch back mums. Cut back asters.
June Deadhead perennials as they finish blooming. Prune roses to the first five-leaf after bloom. Fertilize roses. Pinch back mums and cut back asters for the last time.
July Mulch and water flower beds. Begin to sow seeds for fall crops: lettuce, turnip, spinach. Water early in the morning.
August Keep lawn at higher length during hot, dry weather. Stop fertilizing roses. Keep annuals deadheaded. Divide and pot perennials for fall plant sale.
September Begin to plant spring bulbs. Harvest and dry everlastings. Gather seeds for exchange. Clean out bluebird houses.
October Pull old annuals, leave perennials until spring. Start cleaning and storing garden tools. Clean and store hummingbird feeders.
November Water trees and shrubs thoroughly before ground begins to freeze. Force paperwhites and amaryllis for the holidays.
December Hill up dirt around roses. Mulch strawberries and some perennials. Read new catalogs and plan next year.

Our annual plant sales in May and September are our primary fund raisers.
We have appreciated financial support of the City of Mountain View, Wal-Mart and other interested businesses and individuals.
We receive prize money from the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri, Central Region and National Federation of Garden Clubs for our winning project awards.
