Bacon Log Cabin gets Blue Star Memorial

More than 75 local and state garden club members, U.S. military veterans and leaders of the Old Trails Historical Society attended the dedication held June 7 at the cabin on Henry Road. The Blue Star Memorial Program honors U.S. servicemen and women and was started by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a tribute to veterans of World War II. The National Council of State Garden Clubs adopted the program a year later and began a Blue Star Highway system, which covers thousands of miles across the nation.

The program was expanded to include all men and women who had served, were serving or would serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. Memorial markers and by-way markers were added to the highway markers and are used at locations such as national cemeteries, parks, veterans’ facilities, gardens and other points of interest.

Members of American Legion Post 208 presented the colors and presided over a military tribute that recognized veterans of each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces while a medley featuring each branch’s song played. Others participating in the program included Charlene Wall and Martha Pipkins, Forget Me Not president and vice president, respectively.

Nancy Bahn, president of the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri, dedicated the marker. Dale Naas and Shirley Drury, president and first vice president, respectively, of the Old Trails Historical Society, accepted the new memorial.
