One of our users sent us some interesting pictures showing the coverage of his/her handmade AIS receiver. For the left-side picture, the antenna was described as a slim jim (from http://web.arundale.co.uk/docs/ais/slimjim.jpg) made from an old FM antenna, not fixed, and hanging on a 5m flagpole outside. The maximum range was 30 nautical miles and the rate of AIS messages was 5 to 6 per second.
For the right-side picture, the user used a homemade flowerpot antenna built from cheap 75 ohm coax and cut to dimensions for the marine and coastguard VHF frequencies 156 MHz and positioned inside the building. A helicopter for air-sea rescue was seen passing by.
