An engineer on a cargo shared his experience with us.
He used AISRecWinFull to enhance the tracking of the ship, using his own laptop computer.
Here is the setup:
-RTL-SDR v2 dongle
-LNAforall, low noise amplifier in aluminum case.
-Active USB cable
-Home made Flowerpot antenna, tuned to AIS frequency. (foldable for travel)
The antenna is mounted (with a magnet) just above my cabin window, which is abt 30 mtr above the water line.
When the weather is very clear the reception can be amazing, see attached screendump.
Reception up to 380 nautical miles (700 km), and with 212 targets the updating is still fast.
Nearest base station is at 200 Nm.
With cloudy weather he got a 100 Nm range.
