African Americans in Farmington

African-Americans in New Mexico never represented large populations, however, their contributions cannot be minimized, arriving with Spanish explorers and settlers in colonial New Mexico. They were trappers and traders, Confederate and Union Civil War soldiers, ranchers, cowboys, farmers and arrived with the Conquistadors in New Mexico. Black communities have always relied on their resources, ingenuity and connection with churches and schools (Glasrud, 2013).
