New Zealand Gemptons

Relationship to me: 2nd Great Uncle.

Samuel Gempton (1859-1926)

Samuel Gempton was born in 1859 (1859-1926) as one of 6 children to Joseph Gempton (1824-1903) and Sarah Blackmore (1826-1890). The 3 brothers Samuel, John (1856-1932) and Ernest (1870-19370) became fishermen in the family business. In the 1901 census, Samuel was registered as "Master of the Annie" being in Milford Dock, Milford Haven at the time the census was taken. The sailing trawler "Annie" - BM18, was built by S. Dewdney & Sons in Brixham and was launched in 1886. The owner was listed as Samuel Gempton and the address was registered as 6 North View Road. Samuel married Mary Ann Davies in 1882 and had 6 children - 2 girls, Mary Ann (1883-1886) & Elizabeth (1885-1886) who both died in infancy, Samuel Jnr (b 1887), George (b 1889), William John (b 1891) & Herbert (b 1893). On 21st July1907, Samuel Gempton & his family emigrated from the UK to New Zealand, on the ship Arawa, arriving in Wellington in the same year.

All Gempton's in New Zealand have descended from this family (see family link below) and their Brixham origins.

The New Zealand Trawling and Trading Company

The article in the link below was taken from the New Zealand Herald on the 13th December 1905 and may give a clue as to why Samuel took his family to New Zealand. Opinion had it that they left for a different way of life other than the hardships of the fishing industry -seeking a better life for their children - but there may have been an ulterior motive!
