Transformation and renewal is first and foremost a spiritual process. It is re-rooting in the good news of Jesus Christ and bringing God’s dream for this ministry into focus. It is not a one-person project. It is God’s project among us. It is not just about this congregation. It is about changing the world. As such, we all have choices and commitments to make in living out God’s dream for us. Because change is hard, as transformation begins, it is essential that the partners share clear expectations and that the accountability be strong.
In Fall of 2017, Faith Lutheran Church entered into an intentional congregational renewal process called "CONNECT."
Every 6 months for two years our CONNECT team attended a "link" training event to be trained in the practices and principles of transformational ministry. The team then brings home those practices and principles and discerns how to best live them out in our own congregational setting for the sake of spiritual and congregational growth.

LOOKING BACK &
LOOKING FORWARD
You are might be saying to yourself and oth-
ers, “Well, it’s been two years now so I guess the
Connect team has finished up and will be no more,
right?” WRONG!! We may no longer be called the
Connect team as we move forward on our faith jour-
ney but rest assured, we will not be taking a break
from transformational ministry and congregational
renewal!! This walk to deepen our faith practices is
never ending. With God behind us, God beside us,
and most definitely with God ahead of us, this jour-
ney is one we will never walk alone.
The Connect team recently met at Faith on
November 21st with Nancy Nyland. This meeting
was a “wrap-up” so to speak to evaluate and reflect
on our progress over the past two years. Also joining
us was our Connect coach, Sister Barbara, and her
husband, Malcolm. The Connect team has been so
blessed to have both Barbara and Malcolm coach
us, mentor us, and provide us with spiritual guidance
for the past two years.
Here are a few areas that we reviewed together at
our meeting on 11/21:
• How are we as a congregation connecting with
Jesus, one another, and the world?
• What are some discoveries our team has made
about ourselves, our congregation and our com-
munity during the Connect process?
• How will we continue with transformation follow-
ing the end of the Connect process?
Wow....those are some very thought provok-
ing questions! With that in mind, it’s a great time to
make an announcement: I am excited to let every-
one know that we will be continuing our faithful
transformation journey through the development
of a Vision Team.
This team will consist of a few original Con-
nect members plus some new faces from our con-
gregation. The Vision Team will continue to focus on
and follow Connect’s “Essentials for Transformation”
under the leadership of two co-chairs who are very
familiar with these processes (myself and Candice
Hinkle). Early in the upcoming New Year, this team
will gather and establish goals, both short term and
long term, for the continuation of our journey.
Oh, how God has blessed us all! So, you
might ask, “What will this Vision Team do first?” The
answer.... Pray...Pray...and Pray some more, al-
ways continuing to celebrate God all day, every day!
Then, with prayerful discernment, we will move for-
ward into the future, intentionally partnering with the
Holy Spirit to live out our Mission as God’s people in
this place and community.
Please continue to hold both the connect
team and the future vision team, as well as our con-
gregation, in your prayers as we move into this time
of transition and keep the momentum and energy of
transformational ministry going strong. Thanks be to
God!

Well everyone, time flies when you are having fun! Our two year CONNECT journey will officially
conclude this month with a “Looking Back and Looking Forward” meeting with Indiana-Kentucky Synod
Renewing Mission Table Leader and Director for Evangelical Mission, Pastor Nancy Nyland. During this
meeting, we will celebrate where we have been, while looking ahead to where we want to go.
Where have we been?
Two years ago, our congregation was extremely good at taking care of each other, and the ministry that
occurred within the walls of Faith was rich and vibrant. However, because we were mostly focused in-
ward, we realized through the introduction of CONNECT that our beloved congregation was no longer in a
healthy place on the congregation life cycle. We found through data and surveys, that Faith was, unknow-
ingly, showing red flag signs of decline and slowly slipping towards the end of that life cycle. For many of
us on the CONNECT team and in the congregation, this came as a surprise and prompted a “Call to Ac-
tion.”
The CONNECT process has been long and intensive at times. There were points in the process,
where the “to do” list seemed un-accomplishable! However, with the work of the entire assembly and
your CONNECT team leaders, we rolled up our sleeves, embraced transformation, and set to work finding
new ways to be rich and vibrant inside AND outside.
As I look back at the numerous projects, meaningful conversations, and leadership skills learned, I’m
like a kid in a candy store. Because of the CONNECT process, there are now so many different options
and ideas for growth, that it is hard to just focus on one! Some of our largest growth areas have been
stewardship, mission support, hospitality, technology, communication, and service projects in and for oth-
er organizations.
Where do we want to go?
Although the original CONNECT team will soon be decommissioned, one of the tasks we will ac-
complish before doing so is to create a new team that will keep the energy and momentum going for-
ward. As we turn the corner and look into the future, some of the ideas of CONNECT will continue. We
will still need to continue to have 5-10 community conversations per year, create and maintain goals for
the different ministry areas, as well as continue to pray, support, and lift one another up inside the walls
and outside the walls, including our communities, counties, and the world. Our “Essentials for Transfor-
mation” that we’ve learned and embraced from the CONNECT trainings will continue to guide that work.
Looking forward gives us an opportunity to honor and have gratitude for all the hard work that has
been done thus far, but it also calls for each and every one of us to keep our sleeves rolled up and our
eyes on alert for opportunities to serve our neighbors. Intentionally keeping our sleeves rolled up, ready
to dive in and embrace transformation for the betterment of our assembly and those who are yet to come,
is an important aspect of congregational renewal.
Looking into the future of Faith and our partnership with St. Peters, I would like to ask everyone a
very deep and serious question. Where do you see us in 1 year, 5 years, and 10 years? What goals do
you have for our partnership together? What transformation do you see the Holy Spirit stirring up now and
into the future?
Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come for us to celebrate our growth and hard work thus far!
The time is also, now, to not let our guard down and slip away from being at a healthy point in the congre-
gational life-cycle. Let’s continue to do this important work of transformation and call upon the Holy Spirit
to guide us as we do! Blow Spirit Blow!
Candice Hinkle, CONNECT team chair
The whole idea behind Connect is “Transformational Ministry” – to transform the
congregation spiritually and renew the congregation (and ourselves) from the inside
out.
Next month we will be meeting with Pastor Nancy Nyland, Director for Evangelical
Mission in the I-K Synod, for a session called “Looking Back, Looking Forward” to
review and celebrate all the progress we have made since we began this process two
years ago, as well as discern how to keep this momentum going into the future.
Transformational. That is what this process has been and continues to be. At the very
beginning, our congregation decided we needed the Connect Transformational Ministry
Process. We voted to enter this process in 2017 with overwhelming support: 35 to 3.
We took a “congregational vitality survey” to get a baseline for how we felt about the
strength and health of our relationships with God, with one another, and with our
surrounding community. Our Connect Team of eight church members began meeting
as a group with Pastor Marissa & Pastor Nancy, started meeting with Coach Barbara
and Malcomb, and attended intense training links in Indianapolis. It was not easy by
any means, and there were struggles and emotional breakdowns of “We just can’t do
this!” While the whole process would at times seem overwhelming and impossible, here
we are two years later with goals achieved and the ongoing process continuing.
You see, Connect was never meant to be a “two year, ok we tried that, now what”
program. It leads into an ongoing program that we have started by expanding into 6
TEAMS (leadership, worship/hospitality, stewardship, discipleship/faith formation,
communications/website/social media and faith/outreach).
Have you noticed the “transformations” that have occurred and are still occurring?
We have a new purpose statement with guiding principles to support it.
We’ve reviewed our history and our entrance area has been enhanced with posters
talking about where we have been and where we want to go.
We have welcoming packets to give to visitors and fun bags for children during
worship
We have done “community leader conversations” -- reaching out to community
leaders and others in the community to determine what some of the needs/
strengths are.
We’ve taken a look at our “God-Given Gifts” together in hopes of using them to help
the community around us
Our “God’s Work, Our Hands” projects this year encompassed three different ideas
of outreach instead of one small project.
More people are involved in helping make the worship services happen than just the
same few over and over (multiplying leadership)
Our internet presence has grown to include an updated website, Facebook and
Twitter.
We are even beginning new things in the community such as our first ever
Community Pet Blessing Service this coming Sunday and hosting a Blood Drive in
December.
As I said, all this transformation is not just the work of the Connect Team members.
Have you noticed an increased sense of livelihood and vitality in the congregation?
More of a sense of involvement from more people? More to church than just “attend
worship, go home?” This is what a large part of the purpose of the Connect Process is,
to revitalize the congregation, to get it back on the “up” side of the life cycle. To trust the
Holy Spirit to draw the map and lead us into the future.
Teresa Cooksey, Connect Team Member at Faith
What does this mean and why is it so im-
portant? We have all seen this popular phrase on
bumper stickers, painted on the side of semi-trucks,
and even printed in capital letters on our money.
When most of us hear the words “In God We Trust”
we think of a four-word phrase, something you see
in a moment of boredom should you closely inspect
a dollar bill.
It’s often easy to forget the significance of
these words – it is a message that God is an integral part of our lives and trusting Him is imperative. As indi-
viduals, we may not always understand where God is leading us but our faith in Him will always be the sub-
stance of things hoped for but not seen.
When the Connect team started our journey two years ago, I think it’s pretty safe to say that we were
all blind to what might lie ahead. Were we excited to begin this journey? Were we nervous about what we
were getting ourselves into? Were we feeling challenged? ABSOLUTELY!! Did we put our faith and trust in
God to lead us? Yes we did!! What a wonderful two year journey it has been. In all things, we have put our
focus on growing our relationship with the Holy Spirit. When we are reading, talking, sharing or discussing
God’s word, then we are building our trust in Him.
One of the Connect team’s early tasks was to discern and
articulate our guiding principles here at Faith. Our first principle
was easy for us to develop. It states that we should always:
“Pray and trust God to draw the map”
Trusting in God is exactly where all things must start.
Proverbs 3:5 tells us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and
lean not on your own understanding.” To truly walk with God we
must trust Him. The Connect team continues to walk daily with
God as we move forward on our journey together. With two years
of this intentional congregational renewal process under our belt,
the next step is to figure out how to keep the momentum going and continue to discern where the Holy Spirit
is leading our congregation in our relationships with one another and with our community.
Our trust in His guidance is foremost and the power of the Holy Spirit will bring us all into His king-
dom. Thanks be to God!!
Becky Downham
Dear Faith, Officially in November, our 2-year intentional congregational renewal process known as CONNECT will come to an end. The required activities and events associated with Link 4 will culminate with a final visit from Pastor Nancy Nyland, Director for Evangelical Mission in the Indiana-Kentucky Synod. Your CONNECT team members can put away the red binders, pull down our sleeves, and settle into a rhythm of peace and serenity, never experimenting or changing anything about Faith ever again. The hard work is over, right? We can put all this behind us? NO! Transformational ministry is NEVER done. We cannot roll down our sleeves and fall back into a pattern of inward comfort. We are called to be missional leaders with each other, in our communities, and in the world. Transformation is a life-long process, both individually and as a congregation together. Years of hard work through spiritual and physical transformation is still ahead of us! As we find ourselves soon moving into this next chapter of discerning how to keep the momentum of CONNECT going, let us continue to lift one another in prayer and keep the arrow always pointing to God. Blow Spirit Blow! Candice Hinkle, CONNECT team leader
In our most recent Link Training, we were encouraged to celebrate together as a congregation.
In fact, planning a celebration event is one of our required “development activities” to complete in the
next few months. It just so happens that this year is the 55th Anniversary of Faith Lutheran Church!
Therefore...
You are warmly invited to a 55-year Anniversary Celebration of Faith Lutheran Church on
June 9, 2019 after services. During this anniversary celebration, the Connect Team and the congre-
gation will work together on a history timeline to share our successes and our individual gifts to the
church. This can include marriages, births, graduations, past pastorates, accomplishments of the
church, and other important events in the life of the congregation.
Ultimately the Connect Team and congregation are looking to discover what “Signature Minis-
tries” were a part of Faith Lutheran Church over the years. What was Faith known for in the community
during different time periods? Can we build on these examples or create a new Signature Ministry for
our church in this time and place? Where has Faith been, where is Faith now, and where do you see
Faith in the future?
What is a Signature Ministry?
This describes church communities who respond to the needs around them, engaging and en-
ergizing members in specific ministries in their community and world that turn them outward. Example:
God's Global Barnyard or The Interception Coffee Shop in Logansport, etc. Often congregations that
are thriving are ones that are turned outward towards the world and community.
The congregation and Connect team will discuss how we see Christ in others and how we
might reach the needs of those around us. As The Art of Human Contact describes, "It was seeing
Christ in others, loving the Christ you saw in others. Greater than this, it was having faith in the Christ
in others without being able to see Him. Blessed is he that believes without seeing." (Dorothy Day,
2009)
What could the Holy Spirit be calling us to as a congregation? "Blow Spirit Blow"!

Hello all, the Connect process is still underway. The Connect
Team just attended the final training (Link 4) on April 26 & 27.
During this training we learned a lot about how to keep the mo-
mentum going, sustain the progress we’ve made, and continue
to intentionally work on congregational renewal. There are again
several tasks that we as a congregation will need to complete to
help carry us into the future.
We will need to complete 5-10 more community leader con-
versations as a congregation, and develop a plan to continue
engaging in these on a regular schedule. We need to continue,
starting all small groups and meetings with prayer and devotion.
We need to continue to work on the development and implementation of our congregation’s action plan
(short-term and long-term goals in six ministry areas--Worship/Hospitality, Leadership, Stewardship, Faith
Formation, Sharing Our Faith/Outreach, and Communication/Website/Social Media). Most importantly, re-
flect on what we’ve done so far and celebrate!
We are excited to get started on the link 4 activities. We ask for all your
help. Keep watch for the Holy Spirit and how it’s working in ALL of us. This
will be a guide towards discerning what may be our signature ministry--
what we are known for in the community--at Faith.
Blow Spirit blow,
Jeremy Hinkle

These 72 were selected and sent after the original 12 disciples had been chosen and
sent, thereby showing that our faith is to be shared with all, not kept to ourselves. This is what
Link III of CONNECT has asked us, the CONNECT team, to do: to begin involving the rest of the
congregation in the work of our connect process by way of six main areas of ministry: Sharing
our Faith/Outreach; Leadership Development; Stewardship; Faith Formation; Worship/
Hospitality; and Communication/Website/Social Media.
Each ministry area has been addressed by a CONNECT Team Member or Two, and the
Church Members they have asked to work with them. Some things that have been done have
been obvious, like the Sharing Our Faith/Outreach’s piles of books and Disney characters they
have been sharing with the younger members, friends and visitors, especially on “Bring your
Grandchild to Worship” Sunday. These books have also been shared at LaRibida Children’s
Hospital for Special Needs in Chicago, Area V Headstart; Carroll, Maconaquah, Tri-county and
Columbia Schools; St. Peter’s Lutheran Church; The Carroll County Family Healthcare Center;
And the Carroll County Extension Office to be used at Christmas for their “shopping center.”
The Worship/Hospitality group has been working on being more welcoming to guests by
rewording/updating the communion statement in the bulletin; developing a new guestbook and
area for it with better lighting; updating the attendance board; ordering a restroom direction sign;
providing new quiet time activity packs for children in a new location; working on the getting to
know you members board; researching gifts for visitors; and working on a questionnaire for
guests to evaluate their visit with plans to follow up with them.
The Communications/Website/Social Media group has updated Faith’s website and Face-
book page; and are looking into Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
The Leadership Development group is working on some ideas such as developing a
Praise Group/Prayer Group within the church, discussing how to create and build up leaders who
intentionally outreach to people, and inviting new Council Leaders to serve. They helped with the
“Lunch and Learn” training on Sunday Feb 24th that equipped new worship servants to do
Sound Board, lectoring, setting up Communion, Altar Guild, and Ushering.
The Faith Formation group has created a men’s Bible study that meets 1-2x a month and
is building relationships by meeting at different houses/restaurants around Logansport; using the
Bible Study “Parables.” There is some discussion of starting a Women’s Bible Study soon.
The Stewardship group is grateful to Gary and Carlin for their work on getting Faith set up
with online giving. The Stewardship group will
be hosting a training on this online giving option
once we get it set up and running. They are al-
so looking into a large stewardship gathering in
Indy called “Generosity Transformed” on April
30- May 2 and talking to others in the church
who have been involved in various stewardship
projects.
We ask for your prayers as we continue to work together, and as we pre-
pare to attend the final Link IV training on April 26 & 27. Who knows what
they will share with us to share with you when we return?
Blow Spirit Blow!

Hello Beautiful Church Families!
The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God and the Communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all!
Numbers 11:16-17 The Lord said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders
and officials among the people. Have them come to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you. I will
come down and speak with you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you carry the burden of the people so that
you will not have to carry it alone.”
Link 3 of CONNECT is no easy task. It asks ALL of us, every single one of us, to have a hand in keeping Faith in a
congregational life cycle of growth and development. We all have a part to play whether in action or prayer or partic-
ipating one of the six ministry areas Becky described in last month’s article (outlined below for reference). Together
we are one body, worshiping a God mightier than any of us can imagine. God has diligently brought each of us to-
gether to worship His Holy Name. Oh, how many times I walk away completely amazed at the transformations hap-
pening within our walls. The Holy Spirit is at work - in a BIG way!
So, here’s my challenge for everyone reading this. If transformation is happening within, then can we help it happen
outside of our walls, in that great big thing we call the world? The Lord has gracefully brought us together to worship
Him. As you leave each Sunday, what do you do with the rest of your week? The Good News is to be shared and it
can be as simple as sending someone a card in the mail, praying for loved ones, or--for those of you who are action
oriented--visiting, listening, and walking with others.
Matthew 5:14-16 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and
put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let
your light shine before all, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Blow Spirit Blow! Amen!

Six Ministry Areas at Faith:
As we begin to develop a mission plan for our congregation, we will be looking at six different ministry areas. A team
will be assembled for each ministry area and they will come up with an action plan (1 or 2 major goals) for their area
of ministry. Each of the six ministry teams will be led by a Connect team leader and two or three congregational
members. Connect team leaders will empower their committee to lead, encourage experiment, take risks, and use
their imaginations and creativity:
- Sharing our Faith / Outreach : Teresa Cooksey and Jan Bowman
- Leadership Development : Candice Hinkle
- Stewardship : Joe Buzbee
- Faith Formation : Jeremy Hinkle
- Worship/Hospitality : Becky Downham
- Communication/Website/Social Media : Taylor Hinkle and Margo Layman
The cold and snow may have led to a few Sunday service cancellations, but that
has not slowed the Connect team from gathering. We have been diligently work-
ing on our required assignments from the last Connect training we attended in
November 2018.
Maintaining consistent and ongoing communication with everyone is a
very important goal of the Connect team. It is also a required developmental ac-
tivity for us to complete. How well are we communicating with the church council,
the congregation, and each other about transformational ministry? How can we
improve upon our communication skills? And are we continuing to move transfor-
mational ministry into our congregation with more congregational participation?
Whew...I think that’s a lot to think about! Communication is always an ongoing
process as it is in any relationship. One way the team looks to improve upon com-
municating with the congregation, will be the inclusion of an insert in the Sunday
bulletin every few weeks here at Faith. This insert will provide ongoing updates
from the Connect team. As always, please feel free to speak to any team member
if you have a question or comment. We welcome congregational involvement.
As we begin to develop a mission plan for our congregation, we will be
looking at six different ministry areas. An action plan will be written for each minis-
try area chosen by the teams. NOW... here is the exciting news!!! Each of the six
ministry teams will be led by a Connect team leader and two or three congrega-
tional members. Connect team leaders will empower their committee to lead, en-
courage experiment, take risks, and use their imaginations and creativity. You
may be asked to join a team with a Connect member in one of these six ministry
areas and if so, please prayerfully consider. These action plans will be ever mind-
ful of our purpose/mission statement and guiding principles.
Here are the six ministry areas we will be looking at and the Connect lead-
er that is assigned to each:
• Sharing our Faith / Outreach: Teresa Cooksey and Jan Bowman
• Leadership Development: Candice Hinkle
• Stewardship: Joe Buzbee
• Faith Formation: Jeremy Hinkle
• Worship/Hospitality: Becky Downham
• Communication/Website/Social Media: Taylor Hinkle and Margo Layman
Updates on the progress of each team will be posted in future Sunday
bulletins so more info to come.
A thought to leave with everyone....When it comes to our eve-
ryday lives, it’s important to ask ourselves “Am I putting God first?”
We may all have a plan, but life will throw us curve balls sometimes.
Put God first...His plan is better anyway.
Blessings to everyone,
Becky Downham
Faith Connect Team Member
“Hey there!” from the CONNECT Team. We wanted to give
you an update on what we have been up to this last month! We were busy
finalizing several things in the very beginning of November before our Link 3
training on Nov. 9th and 10th.
The team had several tasks to complete over the 6 months leading up to Link 3 including,
but not limited to, creating a community map, conducting 15-20 community leader conver-
sations, engaging the congregation in a “Discovering Our God Given Gifts” activity, and par-
ticipating in a Purpose and Guiding Principles workshop with Pr. Nancy Nyland to help us
discern an updated purpose statement/guiding principles for Faith.
Those tasks led us up to a presentation we gave to council where we shared the updated
purpose statement and guiding principles. The council members present were unanimously
supportive of adopting the new purpose statement and guiding principles, and we were
excited to share those with the rest of the congregation the Sunday following our Link 3
training. That Sunday, we also had a Blessing of Thanksgiving and Honor for the Retired
Mission Statement and thanked everyone who was a part of crafting that with thought and
care so many years ago. It has served us well for many chapters!
In the coming months our congregation will be asked to participate in several group activi-
ties as part of Link 3. We hope all will enjoy becoming more CONNECTed as a Faith family
and with our community.
Sent by Jesus, We grow in Faith, To love and to serve!
Amen! Jeremy Hinkle, CONNECT Team member at Faith
Jesus...One Another...The World
Greetings ALL from the CONNECT Team! I gotta tell ya...your team has been
very hard at work these past few months! We continue to meet at least one to two
times every month sharing in fellowship, devotions, and working towards the goals
that we established during our Link 2 training back in May. Since this training we
have:
Met with Pastor Nancy Nyland at Faith for a six-hour workshop focused on dis-
cerning Faith’s purpose statement and guiding principles
Completed our “Discovering Our God-Given Gifts” exercise with the congregation
Completed our community leader interviews to learn more about the strengths and
needs of the community around us
Completed our community mapping project where we have identified who our
neighbors are
Planned and participated in an activity for God’s Work Our Hands Sunday (9/9/18)
We have been able to tackle these accomplishments with the ongoing support of
the congregation. Many prayers have been offered to support the Team and we
are very grateful J. Thanks to everyone who has participat-
ed and offered their input! The CONNECT Team so appre-
ciates all that everyone does and how blessed we are to
be molded together with the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Please
remember that our Team is here for questions or just to
explain what we are working on. So always feel free to see
one of us!
At our final meeting before the Link 3 training in
November, we met and watched the movie
“When God Left the Building.” How powerful! We shared, we cried, and
we asked ourselves that ever important question, “What does it look
like/feel like when it seems like God has left your church building? (or
at least isn’t the center of what the church does anymore?)” We, as
your CONNECT Team, are intentionally practicing keeping God first
and foremost in all that we do. He is our driving force! I would recom-
mend this movie to everyone with one suggestion...Pray before you watch it and
pray again after its over. (For those of you who were able to attend St. Peter’s
showing of the movie in 2017 you probably know what I’m talking about).
Finally, after much discussion, thought, and prayer, the CONNECT Team has put
the final touches on Faith’s guiding principles and our new purpose statement.
Both will roll out soon!
May we all continue to be faithful stewards of God’s love and grace.
Blow Spirit Blow !!!

As creations of God, we have many gifts to share with others. Faith Lutheran mem-
bers with the assistance of the Connect team discovered many gifts and passions
that we could share with our communities. Now as a congregation, we will discover
ways to share these gifts and passions with our communities.
The Connect team has discovered that very few community leaders are aware that
Faith Lutheran Church exist in this community. We invited the Logansport communi-
ty to Faith Lutheran Church to enjoy the Logansport Community Choir and a chili
supper. This allowed recognition of Faith Lutheran Church in the community.
The Connect team would enjoy conversations about interacting with the community
in other ways using our gifts and passions.
