Sample Home Reading Notebook entries
HOME READING HOMEWORK INSTRUCTIONS
1. Your child selects a book at school.
2. Your child reads the book (with some help from you if needed) at home. You can use the “Tools for Reading” to help your child with difficult words. (See below)
3. Your child writes the book title and the date in the notebook.
4. Spend some time talking about the book with your child.
5. Your child writes and draws about the book. Below are some questions that may help your child decide what to write. Please do not tell your first grader how to spell words they can sound out. Help them sound it out letter by letter—this is so beneficial for beginning writers.
6. Please do not correct your child's writing at this time. You may begin to help with edits mid-year!
7. Leave the notebook open and return it to the Home Folder.
8. Return the notebook and book to the Home Folder (the book may not fit inside the folder pockets, but please place it between the folder for safekeeping.)
9. The Home Folder should be returned to school in your child's backpack the next day.
10. Reading and math homework should only take about 30 minutes.
