Closure of Ewenny Village Hall

Ewenny village hall is permanently closed.

In early 2022 the Community Council took the decision to relinquish the lease on the Village hall as it was no longer financially viable to retain it. In the past decade the use of the village hall by various groups and organisations has been in gradual decline.

By 2018 the lack of income from hall hire resulted in the Community Council using a significant proportion of its income (called the ‘precept’ which is funding allocated from the council tax by the Vale of Glamorgan County Council) to cover basic running costs such as power and water. In addition the hall itself, a Grade II listed building, required substantial and increasing funding for repairs and maintenance. The purpose of the precept is to be spent on services to enhance the community – e.g. grass cutting and the maintenance of community assets such as the Baptismal pool in Corntown and the play areas. The drain on the income by the village hall put these schemes at risk of neglect.

The Community Council decided to ask the community for its thoughts and views on the future of the hall and in 2019 undertook a programme of public consultation in the form of questionnaires and a public meeting/workshop.

The outcome of this programme clearly indicated to the Community Council that, aside from a small number of groups who were using the hall, there was no appetite for groups to use the facilities, even if they were enhanced.

It was therefore decided to explore the option of relinquishing the lease on the hall.  The lease was then relinquished in 2022.
