The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers, commonly known as The LXD, is a web series about two rival groups of dancers: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers who are the heores and The Alliance of the Dark who are the villains. With stunning choreography, the dancers float over the ground like marionettes or crush the laws of physics as they perform breathtaking aerial maneuvers and transcendental step sequences in each episode. The story takes place over hundreds of years, beginning in the 1920's and leading up to the year 3000. The series is written, directed, and produced by Jon Chu, who also directed Step Up 2: The Streets. He describes The LXD as "balletic", "operatic", "high quality" and like a "Justice League of dance."
Jon Chu wants the series to do more than just "follow the dance-battle zeitgeist that rules today's TV ratings." All of the choreography and stunts are real; there are no special effects or wire work and the entire series is shot on location without the use of green screens. In addition to live performances at such events as the 2010 TED conference, the 82nd Academy Awards, and on the TV series So You Think You Can Dance, The LXD reveals dance superheroes on both sides of the screen - viewers can learn dance moves from instructional videos and even become part of the story by participating in the web community on the website. The LXD is the most viewed original web series on Hulu and Mashable.com called the series "...a game-changer in the way that web series - and the arts - are presented online."
