A Trip to our German Twin Town
At the end of May 2013 eleven English members and an American couple from our Twin Town in Evesham, New Jersey visited our Twin town or "Partnerschaft" - the town of Melsungen in Germany.
The programme, which the Melsungen Committee Members organised, was very well put together and as always we were treated like royalty by all the hosts concerned. Nothing was too much for them; we were picked up from Frankfurt Airport by private cars and minibus, so we did not have to struggle with our luggage on the train.
The ‘Welcome Evening’ at the Schützenhaus was a delicious buffet which was prepared for us by the German members and every one was delighted to see each other again.
On Friday a round trip was organised to visit the Harz Mountains including the historical town of Goslar. Unfortunately we could not enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery because it rained continuously until we arrived in Goslar, when the sun appeared. The tour guide did her best to show us the important sights of the town and on our return journey we had the opportunity to see something of the beautiful Harz Mountains followed by an evening meal in one of their Italian Restaurants.
Saturday gave us the chance to go either shopping, listen to a concert at the Market Place or join a tour guide sightseeing. The afternoon was spent at the Brewery Museum, not only to listen and look but also to sample the beer. Again in the evening we were invited by our generous hosts for a meal in one of their chosen restaurants.
Sunday was a free day and our hosts took us to different places. Our group was taken to Alpha Point Memorial at Geisa/Rasdorf, one of the hottest spots of the cold war, the border between Hesse and Thüringen.
The evening dinner was the highlight of the long weekend stay, presided at short notice by Emanuel Gauley as the Bürgermeister Marcus Boucsein had been taken ill. It was a most enjoyable evening when all the participants came together for the last time to say farewell and promised to see each other at a not too distant future.
The majority of the party left on Monday evening but some stayed on in Germany for a few more days.
