What Is Kairos?

Kairos Prison Ministry International, Inc. (Kairos) is a lay-led, interdenominational Christian ministry in which men and women volunteers bring Christ's love and forgiveness to prisoners and their families.

The Kairos programs take the participants on a journey that demonstrates the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. Kairos Prison Ministry is Christian in nature, although no religious affiliation is necessary to be a participant.

The programs involve a structured model that includes the weekend experience, followed by guests or participants gathering regularly for accountability, support, and prayer.

Kairos is an effective program for teaching God’s unconditional love. Most of the inmates have never witnessed God’s love as demonstrated by Kairos and it has a life-changing impact. They are shown how to love and challenged as grown men to start making better choices that affect their lives and the lives of their families. They usually have been in prison for many years, are seeking a reason to have hope, and are ready for a change. It doesn’t take long to witness a lot of discovery, relief, and raw emotion. By the end of the weekend they are making commitments that are sometimes dramatic and quite risky.

The Kairos Weekend is a well-structured “spiritual retreat” that begins on Thursday afternoon and ends Sunday evening. For three and a half days the inmates are almost completely removed from their prison routine and are given a short course in Christianity. At the same time we feed them (no prison food), sing with them, pray with them, and answer questions. They are never pressured to believe anything, do anything, or commit to anything. Our mission is to demonstrate God’s unconditional love and forgiveness so that they are motivated to change their lives.

As a Kairos team member you will witness the transforming power of Jesus first hand. It is a tremendous life-changing experience for the participants but you too will experience growth in your Christian walk. It is possibly the most meaningful time you will spend doing something for the Kingdom.

The Kairos Team Members work together to fulfill Christ's call to action in

Matthew 25:36

“I needed clothes and you clothed me, (you will cloth them with love)

I was sick and you looked after me, (you will show them forgiveness)

I was in prison and you came to visit me.” (you will provide them hope)
