This class is designed to bolster reading and writing skills, while helping your incoming sixth grader fulfill the Middle School summer reading requirement. I will use Reader’s Workshop techniques with the assigned novels, incorporating depth and complexity strategies, Writer’s Workshop, citation and research skills, discussion practice, as well as essay formatting to help prepare the students for middle school. Students will complete the novel, its companion non-fiction selection, and the summer packet.

Summer Cooking Academy is an exciting class that will encourage the love of cooking in students of all ages. This class is 100% interactive as students will prep and prepare every dish. This year will feature exciting recipes from around the world which are representative of different countries, nationalities, and cultures. Additional activities may include food art, cake decorating, and fun kitchen experiments. A highlight of each week is a team cook-off, "Top-Chef" style, where students will design and prepare original recipes to be judged by independent judges.
Investigate! Middle School Science (Claire Maxwell)

Students will improve their scientific thinking through investigating phenomena from the world around us. Why do planes fly? Why do boats float? How can we predict earthquakes? Students will learn through inquiry and select their own phenomena to study. We will begin by learning about the scientific method and lab safety. Then students will learn the scientific concepts behind the phenomena they chose through the middle school science standards, NGSS. The course will conclude with a “Science Conference” in which students share their evidence and findings.
Students can sign up for all 4 weeks as material will not be repeated.

This class is designed for any student interested in developing their Spanish skills. No prior Spanish speaking experience is needed. However, students will need to bring an Ipad to class every day. This is a fun, relaxed and interactive class where students will be focused on the theme of food. We will be covering everything from expressing you are hungry to how to order food in an informal setting like a food truck and a formal setting like a restaurant (with field-trips to both). We will also be tasting traditional meals from Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.

Writers’ Workshop is for students entering the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The goal of this course is to prepare students for advanced writing, reading, and discussion of non-fiction texts, literature and poetry. Students will learn proper paragraph formatting as taught by El Segundo Middle School Language & Literature instructors. Students will also review essay structure and organization, topic sentence creation, thesis creation, basic grammar, and sentence structure. In addition, students will read poetry and participate in peer editing sessions.
Students can sign up for all 4 weeks as material will not be repeated.
