Students are challenged to design a safety device for an egg.
One project I have students do in an extension of my class is to design and a container to protect an egg during a drop. I give students time to build using limited materials since I'm at a high school level, and I implement size and weight constraints.
There are variations of this activity. One variation is to use only paper and tape to build. Another is to use a pringle chip instead of an egg.
Students work to design and build a container. They develop prototypes, test, and give feedback to each other on their designs. We work as a class afterward to determine what was effective and what was not effective in the students' designs.
