Dr. Schmidt studied marine natural products chemistry at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, with the late great Professor D. John Faulkner. There, he also worked with Professor Margo Haygood on symbiosis in marine sponges. After obtaining his Ph.D., he moved to a postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Chemistry, Johns Hopkins University, where he studied biosynthesis of fungal polyketides with Professor Craig Townsend. Since 2001, he has been a faculty member in the Departments of Medicinal Chemistry and Biological Sciences at the University of Utah and is currently Distinguished Professor and Droschkey Endowed Chair in Pharmacy.
