I LOVE being a part of the Estrella Mountain Community College team!
Here are some of my accomplishments at EMCC (with the help of many students, faculty and staff):
Psychology Club and Psi Beta
Working with students to create a Psychology Club and re-start our Psi Beta Chapter at EMCC! Psi Beta is the National Honor Society for Psychology Students at the Community College. Our clubs this year have: recruited new members, showed multiple episodes of "Black Mirror" at campus-wide events, helped get donations for a local domestic violence shelter for Mother's Day gifts and more! Other club advisors include Dr. Chris Coleman, Dr. Norma Hernandez and Dr. Christina Van Puymbroeck
Biopsychology Brain Day
In my Biopsychology class each semester we do a brain day lab! In this lab we get to revisit all of the brain structures that we have learned throughout the semester in a hands-on lab.
CATS - Comprehensive Assessment Tracking System at EMCC
In the CATS that I won CATS of the Month for, I investigated if an active learning technique (using an interactive web-based review game) worked to improve student studying and student grades. You can see my CATS here.
In another CATS, Dr. Norma Hernandez and I explored any differences between students who take e-quizzes and students who take paper quizzes on a common final at the end of the semester. Our CATS is titled I want to go green, but will it bring down my mean? Examining differences in mean scores using paper vs. electronic quizzes in statistics courses. You can find more detail here.
Collaborations and Educational Research
I have had the opportunity to work with many other faculty and staff on many campus and class initiatives. For instance, I worked on a Learning Inquiry Grant with other faculty investigating how students persist in non-perquisite courses at EMCC. We measured a number of variables and hope to learn more about why some students complete classes and why others do not.
I have also attended a number of campus events and division-led activities! Here I am with other BSCS faculty educating students on some BSCS classes and clubs!
Engage Estrella
In Engage Estrella, students can pair up one-on-one with a mentor in their field. In my two years at Estrella I have had the pleasure of working with two STELLAR students. I was also lucky enough to help each of them win an end-of-semester $1000 scholarship for their continuing education!
Graduation!
Graduation is one of my favorite things to attend. To see students successfully finishing their Associates and transferring to other universities is the BEST part about what I do! To all of my students who have graduated and/or transferred, know how proud I am of you and keep in touch!
