Exploring Paleoclimate, Paleoceanography & Environmental Change

Welcome to the EPPEC lab, where we explore different epocs in earth history to understand epic changes occurring in our environment today, and try to have a bit of fun doing it!

Fundamentally, our research focuses on using the past to inform the future and consists of three primary lines of investigation. First we are always looking to explore new sources of information about Earth’s past climates and environments. Second we apply proven techniques to reconstruct past conditions, and lastly, we work to put the information we find about the past into a modeling framework to better understand the processes involved and the mechanims behind different aspects of environmental change. The ultimate goal is to be able to improve projections of future conditions so that us humans can better adapt to things like climate variations and sea level rise.

Our group resides in the Geochemistry group at Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. Geochemistry is one of our main tools to explore Earth’s past and we have great laboratory facilities within CBL for paleo sample preparation and analysis.
