In 2009, Shaun Gallagher and Anthony Crisafi introduced the concept of "mental institution" to denote those institutions that, via an agent-institution coupling, perform a genuinely cognitive function. This institutional model is part of a broader idea of mind which Shaun called in 2013 "the socially extended mind". Since 2019, I've been collaborating with Shaun to develop these seminal ideas under the header of "cognitive institutions." Among other things, we've been reading economic institutions (markets, cryptocurrencies, etc.) as instances of cognitive institutions and identified institutional criteria of mind extension (i.e., when can an institution be said to extend the mind? When is institutional mind extension sustainable?).Â
