English (British) Cemetery, Surat, Gujarat, India

Info

The English Cemetery at Katargam, Surat is one of the earliest cemeteries founded by the traders of the East India Company in India.

Surat was the leading port of the west coast of India in the sixteenth century.

The English Cemetery contains 17 substantial monuments (leaving aside simple table tombs).

All of these monuments are constructed of brick covered with a thick surface of yellow stucco.

The purpose of the monumental tombs in the English Cemetery was clearly to impress.

A number of commentators, interpret the tombs in terms of the rivalry between the English and Dutch East India Companies at Surat.
