This week we are going to start a series of papers examining data-driven and knowledge-driven category learning and how such studies might benefit from a linguistic theory of genericity. Kim Fuellenbach will kick us off with a discussion of Wattenmaker, W. D., Dewey, G. I., Murphy, T. D., & Medin, D. L. (1986). Linear separability and concept learning: Context, relational properties, and concept naturalness. Cognitive Psychology, 18(2), 158-194. which pits data-driven and knowledge-driven processes against one another.
