Understanding Community Resilience to Earthquake Hazards – findings from the emBRACE Project
Earthquakes are sudden and frequent, and many communities are inevitably exposed to them. Thus, building resilience of communities to earthquakes is important. How risks and adversities, as well as strengths and weaknesses, are perceived is important for understanding what community resilience entails. These perceptions are closely linked with resources and capacities of the exposed community and also the context in which the hazard occurs. Therefore, the evolution of community resilience since these earthquakes can be seen as resulting from the political and social contexts in which theyoccurred.
Community participation, trust, and social networks are valuable assets to facilitate community resilience. Dissemination of information from credible sources, timely and fair aid distribution, and collaboration and coordination between stakeholders are also important for building resilience in communities.
Increasing earthquake risk awareness and preparedness would also facilitate higher community resilience in the face of destructive
earthquakes.
