The aim of this deliverable is to report on the process and results of the emBRACE framework refinement. The process of refining the emBRACE framework is joining two major threads.

The first thread evolved from the ‘First Draft Theoretical Framework’ (Del. 2.1) to the ‘Agreed Framework’ (Del. 2.2) (outlined in the following subchapter 2.1). This is the basis from where we start the framework refinement process.

The second thread relates to the empirical experiences made in the five emBRACE case studies. The empirical findings of the case studies emerged from the three participative workshops held in Cumbria, England; Van, Turkey; Saxony, Germany (outlined in subchapter 2.2). Additionally the connections of the empirical findings of the case studies to the emBRACE ‘Agreed Framework’ have been analysed by means of a poster exercise (outlined in subchapter 2.3). The results of this analysis were the major input for a framework workshop held WSL in July 2014 (outlined in subchapter 2.4). These empirical case study findings are the second source for the framework refinement process.

Together they form the basis for the framework refinement process. The results of the refinement process are outlined in chapter 3 and 4.

This briefing report should be regarded as a short addendum to the emBRACE Deliverable 6.6 Synthesis report on the revised framework and assessment methods/tools.

Presenting the D7.2 brief as an addendum has proven particularly useful, due to the fact that the ‘revised’ emBRACE framework, reported in D6.6, did not mark the final iterative step in the development of the emBRACE Final Framework, as had been originally envisaged. Contrary to the formative proposals written within the project’s Description of Work (DoW), the consortium found that it was only during the final stages of the data analysis, which underpinned the project’s five case-study reports (submitted in Dec 2014 and Mar 2015), that a clear picture of all the relevant elements and interrelationships needing to be incorporated into the emBRACE framework emerged in sufficient detail that their respective importance could be finally agreed. Therefore, whilst D6.6 was delivered on time and in accordance with the DoW, this brief note reports the result of the additional work that was needed for the consortium to reach consensus on what is presented here as the final framework1.

These deliberations also integrated additional feedback from the Project External Advisory Group (EAG) members (i.e. the 2nd EAG Session itself), not reported in D6.6, as well as evidence obtained from our research participants (broadly speaking, our Local Stakeholder Groups; LSG).

What has emerged from this iterative process, however, is a framework that has attracted, both, consortium-wide acceptance and positive feedback from a range of audiences to which it has been presented.
