The mission of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is to advance academic freedom and shared governance; to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education; to promote the economic security of faculty, academic professionals, graduate students, post‐doctoral fellows, and all those engaged in teaching and research in higher education; to help the higher education community organize to make our goals a reality; and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good. Founded in 1915, the AAUP has helped to shape American higher education by developing the standards and procedures that maintain quality in education and academic freedom in this country's colleges and universities.

Our chapter is dedicated to defending academic freedom, promoting shared governance, and working to enhance the interests of faculty. If you need help with regard to any one of these issues, please contact a member of our executive committee above. Or, if you would simply like to report a violation of the principles of academic freedom or shared governance, please do so. As a matter of our commitment and as required by our bylaws, we will respond.
Please note that requests for help and reports of violations will be kept confidential. If you would like to keep a report of a violation anonymous, please feel free to communicate with us without identifying yourself.
1. Support and promote the policies and goals of the American Association of University Professors as set forth in Article 1 of the national association’s constitution, and in all matters act in harmony with the principles and procedures of the AAUP and its constitution;
2. Defend academic freedom at Elon University and throughout academe;
3. Promote faculty participation in governance at Elon University and throughout academe;
4. Protect and advance the professional status and interests of all faculty;
5. Facilitate the dissemination of information on higher education principles and practices;
6. Inform the academic community about AAUP standards and policy statements; and
7. Develop necessary and proper chapter programs for the accomplishment of the aforementioned purposes.
