As a graduate student, I was an active member of the SHaPE research group and the department’s GSO.
As a part of the Space, Health, and Population Economics (SHaPE) group, I was, and continue to be, part of a scholarly community dedicated to cutting-edge research and a rich mentor/mentee tradition. Beyond weekly research seminars, our group builds community through social events and by celebrating members’ achievements. Now, as an alumna of the group, I continue to participate in select events, as well as serve as a mentor for SHaPE students still working toward their degrees.
The SHaPE group also attends, en masse, the Annual Graduate Student Summit on Applied Economics, Regional, and Urban Studies (AERUS). This is a two-day student-organized conference that rotates among Midwestern universities. It focuses on collaboration and networking among graduate students interested in regional science. I was chair of the local organizing committee when AERUS was hosted at Purdue in 2011 and 2015.
As part of the Department of Agricultural Economics’ Graduate Student Organization (GSO), I was a leader in the departmental community. I served as President, Academic Chair, and Social Chair over the course of my graduate studies at Purdue. These positions involved working closely with faculty, staff, and other graduate students to plan social events, participating in departmental and college-wide committees, and representing the department in outreach events.
Because I believe that community is an important part of being a researcher, I am in the process of expanding my professional service outside of the graduate school setting. I look forward to including professional service related to organizing conference sessions, serving on committees, and reviewing the publications of my research peers on this page.
