It is with intentional classroom management and procedures that positive learning environments are cultivated. The main ingredient for building a productive and positive classroom is security. Children must observe and believe that they are feel safe to take risks when learning new things, free to participate in genuine conversations, experience trust and respect, and observe positive interactions, (“Strategies for Building a Productive,” 2018).
While it is best to begin utilizing and implementing classroom management and procedures the first day, week, and months of school; it is truly never too late to use them, the key is consistency, (“Strategies for Building a Productive,” 2018).
I will use a classroom management system that helps create a positive learning environment. Students need a clear understanding of the rules and expectations for the classroom. When working with young children, it is especially important to keep rules simple and direct. Engaging students in the classroom promotes student involvement and positive relationships amongst the teacher and fellow students.
Create a positive action curriculum that teaching children positive actions lead to: good feelings, positive self-image, better decision making and problem solving, help us treat others with respect, encourages us to treat our bodies better, helps us admit our mistakes and be responsible, and helps us set goals, (“Strategies for Building a Productive,” 2018). Ultimately, by teaching positive behaviors teachers help children feel good about themselves and others.
I believe children should also be recognized with positive reinforcement. Little stickers and prizes are fun and nice to earn, but children also need to be taught to appreciate the feelings of pride when they make good decisions, produced quality work, or handled a conflict with grace. Sharing success with parents is key. I will call parents to share personal successes, write notes, and send emails to cultivate meaningful relationships and family involvement. Teacher who actively communicate with parents, help to establish two-way communication and shared goals. My classroom management system will seek to share successes, goals, and challenges with families to encourage their input and support.
Classroom management is not a one-sized fits all program, as a teacher, I will seek to personalize my classroom management policy to meet the specific learning and behavioral needs of each student.
Finally, I will seek to personally know each one of my students. Knowing their likes and dislikes. Knowing what motivates them and what triggers them off. I will respect each child and their uniqueness. Many teachers are narrowly focused on content and standards that they lose sight of each child and what their individual needs and attributes are in the classroom. By taking the time to cultivate and develop a classroom with a positive, nurturing, inviting feeling, I hope to set the stage for meaningful learning and individual growth.
