Melding Diversity and Success with TENABLE Technical Media Communications Skills!
Technology teacher Mr. Gary Krause, CollsTech@gmail.com , inculcates AUTHENTIC Literacy in his students with substantive tasks!
Every student should master the use of REAL tools & graduate with VIABLE skills that require them!!
In a world that is increasingly dependent on Technology, it is imperative that our students gain confidence in their ability to comprehend and communicate effectively using technical terminology. All too often we hear that modern day technology and electronic devices are distractions that interfere with student concentration and school work. Students are plugged in to their MP3 players, glued to their cell phones, are incessantly text-messaging, playing video games and watching movies, television or videos.
Students in Collingswood High School Technology classes, even reluctant learners and readers, unconsciously improve their Technical Literacy skills with projects that elicit interest by employing these normally distracting electronic devices and by using design techniques to create physical as well as virtual models, of the type used in creating electronic devices, video games and video productions. Such projects are a central component in reinforcing student comprehension of technology-based enduring understandings and essential questions!
In Electronics Design I and II, students learn to read and comprehend technical terminology by following written instructions in experimenting with electronic parts and building myriad working electronic devices, such as MP3 amplifiers and microcontroller-based video games. They learn to convey their understanding of these otherwise complex concepts by orally or verbally describing how their circuits operate, creating bread-boarded and proto-typed versions of the circuits, and documenting the circuits by using computer aided design techniques.
In Fundamentals of Design and in Architectural Modeling and Design, students communicate their knowledge of design terminology by following written and oral instructions needed to conceive their designs; they then further demonstrate their understanding of technical terminology by researching, designing and documenting their design projects.
In all Collingswood High School Technology classes, student interests are channeled toward developing technical career aspirations and the self-confidence needed to succeed. Toward this end, students research, read and evaluate information about educational programs and professions in the technical fields.
