With the increased importance and impact of social media in today's society, WNG held it's first "LinkedIn Headshots with WNG" event where everyone had the opportunity to have new LinkedIn appropriate profile pictures taken. Helpful tips and suggestions on how to create and improve LinkedIn profiles were given with the aim of increasing visibility to the right audience (i.e. job recruiter, hiring manager). These measures include adding appropriate key words to profile to increase visibility in other search engines, having a headline that contains one’s specialty and unique value, appropriate profile pictures (NOT selfies), completing the overview section, using key words to describe experiences, highlighting achievements, receiving recommendations from key personnel in the field, e.t.c.
As students and post-docs alike approach the end of their training, one of the key questions on everyone's mind is "what will I do next and how do I get there." For this reason having an organized and carefully written LinkedIn profile serves an essential function to allow users continue to build their networks during their training. Through our networks, one can connect for informational interviews, increase our visibility and also potentially have people that can be willing to assist during job search. However all were cautioned of the importance of not simply using the networks for your benefit, but remembering that people are more willing to be of assistance if they see you as an asset to them as well.
As always we are open for questions and happy to assist with any aspects of this or refer you to the best resource. We hope to have more events such as this in the near future.

Another successful event hosted by the WNG at Einstein - “Coffee and Bagels” with Dr. Lin-Chi Chen discussing her experiences as a woman in industry on December 17th, 2019. Dr. Chen discussed various topics ranging from her experiences from her research training in the lab of Dr. Arturo Casadevall at Einstein to considerations when applying for post-Einstein training (residency and fellowship programs) as well as positions in academia and industry.
She encouraged taking the time to evaluate all the areas within industry, including venture capital, business development/partnering, research, clinical development, regulatory affairs. She emphasized the importance of continuing to reassess your interests no matter where you currently find yourself on your training track and throughout one's career.
Dr. Chen highlighted that while there are a large number of women in industry, certain perceptions persist that potentially limit advancement and promotion. While there has been progress, unconscious biases persist which will only improve with awareness in ourselves as well as across all groups. One step that can be addressed on the individual level is developing comfort in self-promotion and negotiation. Regardless of background, having confidence in one's abilities and value while being self-aware are key components in anyone's career path.
