Extract from the Bunyip (Gawler SA) 29 March 1946

In August of 1945, a district hall for Gawler Blocks was mooted, and a Progress Committee was formed: on Tuesday evening of this week the hall was officially opened, the ceremony being attended by a large and enthusiastic crowd, 20 pound being taken at the door. Urged by the school teacher, Mr L M Webb, the residents - men and women - rapidly developed the community spirit , and set to work to raise money by all means of community effort.  A sub-committee was deputed to buy one of the military huts at Sandy Creek, and at the dispersal sale secured a hut 105 x 42 at a cost of 275 pounds. Tenders were invited for dismantling and re-erecting at the Blocks, a district resident, Mr  H W R Wiese, builder and contractor, securing the work at 245 pounds. The land had previously been most generously given by Mr Murray Hillier, the block (adjoining the school) being large enough to permit also of a couple of tennis courts if the Progress Committee so desire.

The dedication of the hall was carried out in the soldiers ceremony of 'They shall grow not old', the large audience standing in silence in memory of the fallen.

The Association was formed in 1945 to provide an avenue for socialising and representation for the residents of the area.

Managed by community members, it has since provided these services to the local community and continues to do so.
