George
Originally from Texas, George is a joint MSc student at Queen’s University and CBU on a Mitacs Accelerate grant. George’s Master’s focuses on the sedimentology, stratigraphy, and diagenesis of the Givetian Dawson Bay Formation of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. George’s drill core, outcrop, and mine-based study is designed to better understand the paragentic history of this important limestone unit, which directly overlies the Prairie Evaporite and is the cap rock for potash mines across Saskatchewan. Understanding this important unit will allow for a more comprehensive understanding of geohazard risks across the province!
Jess
Jess, a CBU undergraduate majoring in history with a minor in earth and environment, joins us from New Waterford, Cape Breton. Jess’ is conducting a detailed investigation of an exceptional outcrop of the Mabou Group in southern Cape Breton. Her work has focused on investigating unique soft sediment deformation structures (SSDS) found throughout the succession and testing hypotheses on their origin, including the potential they formed from seismic activity 300-odd million years ago! Jess was awarded a CBU Undergraduate Student Scholar Award (USSA) for her work in 2024! She also presented her work at the 2025 CBU Student Research Poster Showcase as well as the Atlantic Geoscience Society (AGS) Colloquium in Moncton in February 2024 where she was awarded the Rupert MacNeill Award for best undergraduate student presentation! Congratulations Jess!
Zailynne
Zailynne, a Cape Breton University (CBU) undergraduate with an interest in geology and biology, joins us from Sydney, Cape Breton. Zailynne’s work in the CBSRG focuses on basal Windsor Group carbonates of the Macbeth Brook and Gays River formations of the Sydney Basin in northeast Cape Breton. Zailynne is combining her unique interests to better understand the paleoenvironments of shallow-marine thrombolitic communities and to revise the stratigraphic correlation of the area. Zailynne presented her research in a well-received poster at the 2025 Atlantic Geoscience Society (AGS) Colloquium in Dartmouth and the 2025 CBU Student Research Poster Showcase! Zailynne has also been awarded a CBU Undergraduate Student Scholar Award (USSA) and NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) for her work. Great Job Zailynne!
Graydon
Originally from Louisbourg, Cape Breton, Graydon is combining his interest in the environment and geology through his work in the CBSRG as he completes his Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BET) in Environment Studies at CBU. Graydon is focused on setting up the capabilities for the CBSRG to create 3D virtual outcrop models using drone-based structure from motion photogrammetry. As part of this, Graydon is creating the Cape Breton Virtual Outcrop Collection, an effort to digitize the island’s spectacular geology and make it available to geologists around the world. He is in the process of building models of wide-ranging geologic features from Carboniferous reefs to fossil forests to spectacular coastal successions and more! Stay tuned for more to come from Graydon’s hard work!
Cole
Hailing from Cape Breton, Cole has undertaken a number of projects in the CBSRG that build on a BSc in Chemistry at CBU and a growing passion for geology. Most recently, he worked on a stratigraphic correlation project in the Smyrna Mills Formation near Woodstock, New Brunswick. Cole has also worked on sample preparation and analysis of carbonate carbon and oxygen isotopes and conducted sample preparation and field work for a variety of Cape Breton based projects.
Kayla
Kayla joined CBU and the CBSRG from Kehewin, Alberta. Her research focuses on reconstructing the growth architecture of microbial communities and other reef-dwelling organisms in an early Windsor Group thrombolytic reef in the Sydney area. Kayla is advancing our group's understanding of this unique ecosystem through the development of novel techniques to visualize these cryptic organisms. Stay tuned for the result of Kayla’s exciting work.
Past Group Members
Stevie
Stevie, a Biology major with a Geology minor at CBU, completed his time with the CBSRG conducting a stratigraphic analysis of the Maritimes Basin fill exposed at Cape Dauphin, Cape Breton, focusing on detailed logging of the section and lithostratigraphic correlation to pre-existing stratigraphic frameworks.
