Dr. Edward (Ted) Matheson is an Assistant Professor of Geology who teaches Earth Science and Environment Studies at Cape Breton University (CBU) in Nova Scotia, Canada. His research expertise lies in chemical sedimentology with wide-ranging interests from deep time paleoclimate to diagenesis and fluid flow to critical mineral resources. In this capacity, he heads the Cape Breton Sedimentology Research Group (CBSRG) at CBU.
Before joining Cape Breton University in 2022, Ted was a Mitacs Accelerate Postdoctoral Fellow at Queen's University working with Dr. Peir Pufahl (Queen's), Dr. Lee Groat (UBC), and their partner organization, Nutrien. His research focused on the origin of the Devonian Prairie Evaporite Formation potash giant of central Canada, with a particular focus on the sedimentologic, mineralogic, and geochemical records of potash deposition, diagenesis, and post-depositional fluid flow as they relate to economic extraction of these world-class potash deposits.Â
He also completed an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship with Dr. Peir Pufahl on the paleoceanographic significance of Paleozoic ironstones. This built on a sedimentology focused PhD in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with Dr. Tracy Frank, and BSc and MSc degrees in the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada where he works with Drs Noel James, Bob Dalrymple, and Kurt Kyser. Ted has also gained industry experience through summer internships with Imperial Oil and Shell in Calgary, Canada where he worked on various regional hydrocarbon assessments and geohazard assessments.
